Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. I've overcome my fear of posting in new forums because I need your help G&T.
I have broken my hand.
As an RTS and FPS fan this is obviously an issue. I would like to play something while I heal up (6 weeksish) so I'd be enormously appreciative for any suggestions.
It's my mouse (right) hand but I could do with left handed practice anyway so that's not an issue.
I shall continue spamming my suggestion of Armagetron Advanced, as it is addicting, playable on the net, decent graphics, 1.5Meg download.... there's nothing bad about it. And only two buttons!
I would think turn based games would be good.
No matter what you're gonna have some trouble with only your left hand.
Turned based means you can take your time and still enjoy yourself.
If you have a laptop, things will be much easier - as you can use your left thumb to work the touchpad.
If you're right-handed, trying to use a mouse with the left hand will drive you up the wall - but a touchpad is actually very intuitive for your left thumb to pick up - plus if it's a touchpad that reconizes taps on it as mouse clicks, you're all set!
If this is a possibility, then almost any turn-based game (strategy / adventure / RPG / etc.) will work flawlessly.

If you've ever played Magic: The Gathering, you'll be in love.
If you're looking to spend a bit of money, I'll give my usual suggestion: Civilization 4 + Beyond the Sword. Turn based, awesome, and more addictive than the pain-killers you're probably taking.
As it's been mentioned, turn based is going to be your friend. I played a lot of Civ4 (with the Fall of Heaven mod) which works well because you can do everything with the mouse. Basically, anything that doesn't require quick movements is going to be playable.
I had a hell of a time playing RTS while gimped (SC was a bitch without the keyboard shortcuts) and FPS are largely out the window, so I'm afraid your two mainstays are going to be unavailable.
Here's some suggestions:
Civ4 + Expansions - The mods (favorites are Fall of Heaven and Rise of Mankind) really extend the gameplay as well.
Defense Grid - Easy to play one handed, but still entertaining
Plants Vs Zombies - See above
Hearts of Iron 3 - I havent played it recently, but if they've patched it up nicely it should be good. Technically an RTS, you can pause time to issue orders.
Empire: Total War - Turnbased campaign map, you can pause the RTS battles.
Dragon Age: Origins - RPG, but it uses Bioware's standard ability to pause the action.
Good luck man, I feel your pain!
Edit: In the amount of time it took to write that all out everybody suggested the games I suggested. Blast!
Play some hentai games. They were designed for one handed gameplay. :winky:
In all seriousness, play a turned based strategy game like Civ 4. Anything that let's you play at your own pace. And listen to some music and podcasts.
That guy who makes all the "Slim" versions of consoles, he was hired to make a one handed controller for that crappy Tucker Max movie. He has demo videos of him playing Halo 3 fairly well with a modified one handed controller.

You should definitely dig up a copy of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 + expansions, and/ or Heroes of Might and Magic 5 + expansions. Never played 4 but take it as gospel that 3 and 5 are amazing.
There still hasn't been a new release lately, but ...Dwarf Fortress (and the requisite Wiki if you've never played it before)? Everything is keyboard based (although you can do designations for mining and deforesting the landscape with a mouse if you want). Spacebar pauses at any time so you've always got time.
Otherwise, I'll second Civilization 4, Hearts of Iron (preferably 2 or 3), and Rome/Medieval/Empire Total War. Something like Puzzle Quest could work as well (there's no speed involved at all as far as I know).
As additional options, if you have a flight stick you can try something flight related. MS flight simulator can be flown with one hand (if you don't mind a little difficulty working the throttle or other flight aspects).

The facehuggers want to play with you in the AvP LP. Facehuggers also want you to check out the TF2 cards here. View the in-progress RE mansion recreation for L4D here.

The World Ends With You, for some horrible, horrible reason. Then again, I just broke a finger.

No?
Then Japanese dating sims.
Yeah, the six-axis is really awesome.
I cut my finger once badly and went crazy because I couldn't play for like two days, so I read instead.
Or Titan Quest.
Or Diablo 2.
Clickclickclickclickclick.
Machinarium maybe too.
Galcon is RTS-lite, played almost entirely with the mouse.

Or better yet, read books and watch movies!

Outside of that there were PC ports of Final Fantasy VII and VIII you could give those a go.
If you've got a Wii, you should really play Bit.Trip Beat. The Wii has a ton of games that only require you use your right hand.
Something like this?
Seriously, I can barely light a cigarette and I've got both hands again.
wow, that is a pile of madness right there. is it a mouse as well?
thanks for all your suggestions guys, should take me about 6 weeks to try them all! i might have to invest in a little Civ 4 straight away though.
i tried Empire but I use the keyboard a lot and just got frustrated with the inability to do anything quickly/easily
for those of you suggesting alternative entertainment, I'll be catching up on all manner of TV series and readin' as well

Earthbound.
You can play it with just your left hand, for real.
A lot of Wii games are playable with just one hand.
