The Players :
Erris Iratian, a paladin from another world who's willing to help save this one. Or burn it to ashes around her. Tune in next week to see if she can control her temper!
Amaryllis, a dreamy (get it?) cleric who struggles with the military aspect of the military.
Magllea, a scholarly student of the arcane from a race of slavering barbarians.
Marazzo DiGrassi, the foppish courtier looking for a fencing partner. "Watch what you say, or else [he'll] put out your lights!" - RHMIT
Last but certainly not least,
Nall, deadonthestreet's Drow Assassin. Hey, somebody in the party has to be sane. Well, relatively sane... Just don't mention mages!
Members who up and disappeared one day:
Tern Blackbriar, adorable mascot and puissant druid rolled into one.
Kaazin, the rogue so badass it took an encounter with death to teach him caution.
Rolls on Orokos, Campaign name 'The Auxilliaries.' Out of Character posts in
Slate Grey, please. If you don't mind, a short OOC blurb about anything you'd like to do in the game, or what you're looking to get out of the game would be appreciated. I'll try to cater to what you guys are looking for.
The Opening
The same sneering courtier drops five applications on the table unceremoniously the next morning. 'Be in my office at third bell.'
The five of you receive reluctant congratulations from your competitors. After lunch, the guards admit you into the palace. You're led down a series of winding corridors. By the time you reach the functionary's office, the hallways have narrowed, and the walls are no longer decorated with fine tapestries. The large desk is covered in papers, and the little man is snoring when the page tasked to guide you knocks on the door. Awaking with a fright, he relaxes after a moment.
'Oh, right. You lot. Picked a leader yet, have you? No? Well, someone take the letter. It's a copy of the one we received from Lord Smith. We're not sure exactly what the problem is- Sir Steven can be rather excitable. Certainly we're not convinced Stonebrook's actually being troubled by magical mud-men. Your charge is to journey to Stonebrook, assist Sir Steven in whatever he requires, procure his written assurance that the problem has been solved, and return here for your pay. The guards at the west gate will give you a copy of the King's Pass and some maps. Best of luck, I'm very busy'
The door is closed without ceremony, leaving you one crumpled piece of paper richer than you were when it opened.
To His Majesty King Erik the Just,
Please be advised our fair city is plagued by the earth itself. Violent quakes damage buildings and injure our citizens, and men cast out of mud attack us after every rain. We begin to find it difficult to dispatch the dirt-creatures after so many attacks. Magician and Priest report no magical energy from the creatures. We await your majesty's pleasure in restoring order.
Your loyal subject,
Steven Smith
Huh. He certainly doesn't
seem excitable...
Get to know one another, and then give me a !ready when you're ready to leave the city.

Also, I forgot to mention in my submission post: I know double weapons are considered cheesy by some, so whatever house rules you feel are necessary to balance my double sword are fine. Mostly I took it for flavor, because I couldn't see my massive former berserker poking at people with a short sword or rapier.
Kaazin snorts softly, rearranging his considerable bulk as he reads the letter over his new ally's shoulder while she reads it aloud. He towers over the rest of them, well-muscled with a coat of coarse white fur. He has less fur on his face than most minotaurs, although people very rarely seem to know how much fur a minotaur usually has on his face. His eyes are mostly white, with a single point of red at their center. His face and horns are decorated with an intricate mazelike pattern. His armor is ragged leather and across his back he has a large, unusual weapon, like a staff with sword blades attached to each end. He sizes the others up quietly, but is jostled a bit by the mention of his "cow head".
"Where I come from, everyone has cow heads. Sort of."
Is that art from Homelands?
"Things are strange everywhere," he replies brusquely, reticent to talk too much about his past.
Amaryllis adjusted his robes and looked around at the individuals that had been thrown together for a task that they had very little passion for. He took the note and began to read it.
I'm just looking forward to a fun game with everyone. And to flex my cleric healy powers. I'm looking for a token now, will update with picture.

The only problem I have with double swords is that they look silly :P. Let's not worry about it yet. If you start to go too crazy with HBO or something and it bothers me or another player we'll deal with it then.
Hopefully that isn't too hard to token-ify. I'm not too picky as to what I'm looking for. This will be my first 4e game, so while I'm pretty sure I have the rules and such all down, I may slip into 3e mode sometimes. I'm just looking for a game and this seems like a cool one to have made it into. Maybe something down the road to address Erris' background would be cool, but I don't expect it.
Erris sized up her companions and drummed her fingers silently against the pommel of her sword. She spoke to all of her new companions and the words echoed into their minds.
"I am glad that Pelor has blessed me this day to be in your company. Feel free to speak to each other through me if you wish...my abilities to help us speak through our minds can keep those with prying ears busy elsewhere. I am Erris, and I am originally from beyond this world...though I have been here since I was a child. I was left here and raised with the grace of Pelor at the Reliquary of St. Demetrius the Pious."
Erris sized up the group. Something about the minotaur uneased her, but his strength would be an obvious boon. The dwarf brought a smile to her face, but she quickly remembered the exploding orange and reminded herself not to underestimate her. She couldn't quite get a fix on Nall yet. She had to remind herself that the drow around Tanis were not the same as those she was told stories of in her childhood. She turned last to Amaryllis. Erris knew that there were other Kalashtar on this world, but she had never seen one. Her mind raced with a million questions and she thought her heartbeat could be heard throughout the whole room. She bit her lip and calmed herself by reciting the first verses of the Summerdawn Song.
"Do we leave for Stonebrook soon then, or is there anything anyone needs to attend to first?"
First IC post and portrait coming soon. Portrait is hard because every picture of a drow is so damn emo.
No one is trained in Arcana or History. This is probably because no one has an int over 10.
"I'm Nall, from Oderfund in the East."
"And you...the redhead, this talk of talking through the mind? I don't like it. Can you look into out minds without our permission? Because if you can, I'm going to have to ask you not to. And if you do, well, look, just don't, ok? It'll be better for all of us."
"As to picking a leader, well, we probably should do that."

"How about one of the pretty ones? Uh..." Kaazin glances over them, then points to Erris. "You. I vote you."
"Thank you, Kaazin. If you wish, I can speak for the group. Pelor has blessed me with an ability to command attention and sway hearts. I leave it to everyone to decide, but know that I will lead if you wish, or stand by another leader if you so choose. I also will seek your counsel on any matters of importance."
"Nall, you have no need to fear my telepathy. It is as natural for me as your ability to see in pitch blackness, and hopefully just as useful to us. I can only perceive what you are willing to send, and when I am around you can even leave me out of the conversation if you so wish."
"Amaryllis, I look forward to working with both another man of the cloth and a fellow Kalashtar...I must admit, I have several questions to ask of you, as I have not spent much time with anyone of my own race, but those can wait for later."
"Tern...I too am concerned at what these mud-men may be..."
Arcana check 14. Guessing no luck?
Also !Ready when everyone else is.
Amaryllis glanced around the group from under his white hood, waiting for an answer.

I have no fancy knowledge skills to try. If we need someone to attempt to pick up and throw a mudman, though, I'm your guy.

Nature and arcana checks don't help - the letter is just not detailed enough.
The road to Stonebrook is mostly uneventful at first. Near Tanis, the guards are known to patrol the roads frequently, and if any bandits remain in this part of Hayven, they're unwilling to challenge an armed party openly displaying the King's Pass. Your journey comes to a quick halt, however, at an inn near the Western Fang mountain range. Travellers from Tanis must pass through these mountains or take a long detour. Normally this is not much of a problem, but as the innkeeper informs you, the normally wide and gentle Evendrell Pass is completely blocked by some sort of muddy rockslide.
"Jes' rocks and mud tagether ta form a wall like ya never did see. Don't rightly know where it all came from, if I wuz to tell ya the truth. We sent a letter ta the king when it happened last week. "
When he sees the King's Pass, he offers a little more information.
"Ya can try the belowground if ya like... nobody knows what's down there. The orcs ta the north have some way of getting over thrah the mountains, I know... and I think Rollo there knows a pass ta the south."
With the last words, the innkeeper points to a stick-thin dwarf snoring softly at a corner table. "Have ta wait until morning, of course!"
I have to get to sleep, or I'd throw up a world map for you all. I'll try to get to it [strike]in the morning[/strike] at lunch
As you look over to him, he smiles big and seems embarrassed, he had forgotten about his telepathy in all the excitement.

"Perhaps it would be wise to wait until we speak to Rollo. I do not fear a dangerous route, but it is unwise to pursue danger if we needn't. In the meantime, barkeep, do you know anything about the orcs to the north? Are they numerous? Can they be reasoned with? We can't delay too long, and any information about the quickest route to take would be most appreciated. Stonebrook is having...issues with mud as well, and if we are able to solve it there, perhaps it would help here as well. If not, the least we can do is pass on to our superiors a first hand account of the troubles here; I can imagine it has rendered business a bit slow."
Erris thumbs the few coins in her coin-purse and tries not to let her next question sound too desperate.
"We may need a place to stay for the evening...what fare would you ask of us that travel in the King's name?"
If it isn't too late, perhaps we can see if we can gather some info. Is it just the inn or are we in a town of some sort? If it is early enough, maybe a trip to the mudslide itself wouldn't be out of the question.
Turning, he responds to Tern's question. "Nobody knows how many orcs are in these mountains. At least one tribe, for sure. Never had any trouble with them. The half-orcs keep them civilized, I guess... Alric's army left them alone, anyway."
It's early afternoon. You can see the mountains from the inn. The pass is half an hour away.
Amaryllis looked to Erris, waiting for her decision.

!Ready once that is answered. Let's get out the Kahlua and get us a mudslide.
