So I'd like to put video from a DVD onto an iPod touch

And I've got a program that will convert video from format X into something that will play on the touch, but I don't have anything to get the video from the DVD onto my computer. I've run google searches but everything I come across is trialware, and that usually leaves a watermark. I'm not completely opposed to paying $20 or $30 for a program, but I assume there's GOT to be some genuine freeware out there that'll do the trick.

If I do have to buy a program, which one should I go with?

There is a program for you, Handbrake. It does DVDs nowadays and has presets for most devices, including the iPhone and iPod (also Touch.)
