I'm a senior electrical engineering student and for one of my project courses, the professors want us to invent a product we can eventually patent. Obviously, coming up with a patentable idea is proving difficult. And that is why I am here.
I want to create something that alleviates people's frustrations with something. So, I just wanted to ask you guys what frustrates you in your daily lives? What gets you worked up? Maybe we can create a product which can cure that.
I actually read this as wanting to "cure frustration". Which would be impressive. I had a witty response about a perpetual motion machine all typed up...

Back in the day, bucko, we just had an A and a B button... and we liked it.
Well, let me start off with this... do not try to solve something too large. Being a student and not a company, you probably do not have a lot of capital to develop something overly large and complicated. Shoot for something small and less complicated, unless you have the aide of peers, with access to their knowledge and capital as well.
You could take an existing product and think of it in a new way, re-designing it to perform in a new way. Or you could possibly take something that the public as no access to and make it available. One example is this:
You have no doubt heard of OnStar, correct? That system that tracks cars and links them through to the manufacturer to allow them to see if it has been in an accident or open the car if the keys are inside. Another example is that Link Schlag phone activated door locking system. It allows you to lock and unlock the door with a simple button push from your cell phone. You may be able to see if you can come up with a consumer version of that system but allow it for cars, truck, w/e. I am not sure of the patent holdings for this system though, and cannot say whether it would breach their patent holdings, but you could always look and then patent it yourself.
I'll say it again, think of an idea that would either solve a small problem most people encounter, or a large problem few encounter. You could shoot for world changing, but that would take a lot of time, effort, and of course capital. Best of luck to you in this regard.
PS- What frustrates me? hmmm.... well, I would say mostly other people are the cause for such frustration, but you cannot create a school project that would "solve" the "problem" of other people short of creating a weapon. :P I am kiding of course.
Best of luck.

If nothing is impossible, then would that not mean that it would be impossible to find something that is impossible?

You have no idea how much it pisses me off when the water line that attaches to the sprayer on my sink gets caught on the various piping under the sink and then I can't pull the sprayer out. Seriously. Solve that shit. I'm not sure what it would have to do with EE specifically, though, if that happens to be part of the requirement.
potato peelers. screw those guys. can't i just have some kind of potato peeling apparatus that i can dump the thing into and it will just peel it? and it just knows how much to take off?
also something that will boil potatoes faster.
basically i hate potatoes.
electronic tracking devices for money so you can follow it if it gets stolen. (though i think this has been done and also i just thought of it because i mentioned it in another thread.)
oh. how about a pip boy in some form or another. well, i'm trying to help for "ideas", none of these are good but they might lead to something.
patentable.....uggghhhhh went through something like this during college, but nobody in the class really wanted to participate, so we came up with the worst ideas possible... why?
our college had some clauses that anything created for a class was intellectual property of the college. Now they ask you to come up with something patentable which you cannot now own with their silly rules of hey we are gonna steal this from you without some giant legal battle.
this was for computer science majors. you don't want to be the guy who creates the next yahoo, google, etc... only to have no rights to it. Look up in your school rules/handbook or ask your professor about this. If you do manage to come up with a good idea the last thing you want is having it stolen or having to fight in court for it.
or just look for ideas to something so unnecessary it makes you laugh, think Billy Mays type garbage or that recent episode of Sunny in Philly.... are your Kittens too loud? Try Kitten Mittons!
FUCKING CABLES FUCKING EVERYWHERE! Audio. Video. Power. USB.
I want ONE. SINGLE. CABLE. per device. Period. I don't care how, just do it.
also something that will boil potatoes faster.
Microwave.
I want no cables. Or, like, 1 cable that links to a hub that connects to another hub wirelessly where all my stupid wires are. I hate having 80 million wires sprouting out of my computer and all over the floor (my desk isn't against a wall), I want more wireless, and fewer wires
This really smacks of getting others to do a significant part of your homework for you. I imagine the difficulty of coming up with something narrow enough and novel enough to be patentable is part of the task, or it wouldn't make much sense to put that sort of requirement on the assignment. Unless you want to show me where your prof told you to get people to help you figure out what to design, this is pretty much a no-go.

Not one product that claims to eliminate them actually does.

I don't think you can patent a subway system though.

I'm with this guy.
If you can fix this, it would be epic.
My new iPhone headphones came with a little triangular case, completely eliminates tangled headphones so long as I store them in there.
