what should I wear for ballroom dancing lessons?

My friend invited me out for lessons, and I read that "street shoes" aren't allowed. So, what type of shoe should I wear?

As for clothing, I take it I just need something comfortable?

Dress shoes with a leather sole, at least, if you don't have fancy dancing shoes.

Anything with a rubber sole is going to totally mess you up because they won't slide across the floor well.

Are there alternatives to leather? Vegan here.

Depending on the ballroom you're dancing on they may just have you take off your shoes and dance in your socks. Can you call one of the instructors to find out?

Just imagine yourself in your full buisness suit, now take off the suit and leave on the shoes. Those are the shoes you'll need.

Ack, those are uncomfortable. Time for new shoes!

I'll call about the sock thing.

Actual dancing shoes have felt on the bottom. Of course, those are somewhat expensive. As for clothes, wear something that you can move easily in, like slacks or jeans.

Thinking about it, you could probably put some felt or possibly even packing tape on the bottoms of rubber shoes for much the same effect. The couple of times I've gone curling, we just used tape which slides along well (albeit on ice)

Is it just me, or could "no street shoes" just mean don't wear shoes that you wear, like, out on the street? As in, please don't dirty up our nice parquet dance floor with your filthy outdoor shoes? Either way, you should probably just call the place and ask for clarification.

No,it means no sneakers. A lot of them can really scuff up ballroom floors badly.
