Buying banned XBox 360?

Hi all, recently became interested in purchasing a 360 after seeing those WalMart ads selling the Arcade for $200 with $100 giftcard, but the Arcades are all sold out in my area. Then I heard about being able to buy banned 360s on eBay for pretty cheap.

1) Can the banned 360s still play all singleplayer games? That's all I'm interested in, as I already have a PS3 that I'd be doing all my multiplayer on. Only want a 360 for playing stuff like Mass Effect or Splinter Cell and that's it.

2) Can banned 360s download patches for singleplayer games, or do you need access for Live to do that?

3) What's my best bet for finding a seller on the up and up? Just find someone with good feedback and hope that I don't get a RROD system?

My apologies if asking about this breaks any forum rules, just interested in playing a couple games cheap without having to pay for an expensive system, not interested in pirating games.

Thanks!

    1) Yes.

    2) No.

    3) Pretty much, because if you get an RROD you're screwed. Plus you run the risk of there having been <ActsOfGord> a retarded monkey with a soldering iron </ActsOfGord> attacking the motherboard and making things more likely to fuck up longer-term.

I'd just wait for Black Friday or a Christmas sale personally. Reliable hardware, likely newer, definitely warrantied, and if you ever want to dip your toe into the online world with a 360 exclusive or even just DLC, you can do it.

But if you're intent on getting a banned unit, there's going to be a million of them on eBay soon.

yea there was a recent ban wave that my friend was caught up in.

I personally don't want to have a modded unit because I may want to play online, and I don't want to buy a new unit again or buy an old one and have it be a bad chip set. I got a new X-box cheap off of ebay, just need to be patient.

I wouldn't, certain new games require you to update to the latest patch and if you cant upgrade on a banned xbox then it will be just be a paper weight.

Seconding the wait for Black Friday/Christmas deals. There's just way too much risk in going for a banned console to be worth the money you save.

Buying a banned Xbox would get you a system that, in my opinion, would be way too gimped to be useful. You'll never be able to use Netflix, play any multiplayer games, download any patches, buy any Live Arcade games, buy any DLC for games...it's basically a last-gen console with better graphics. Even if you don't want to do any of that stuff now, you might in the future.

And your profile and save games on the banned console cannot be moved to another console (they're seen as corrupted). So you'd lose any achievement progress (having to recover the gamer tag) and all your saves when you get a new console. Allegedly. I don't have any personal experience with it, but there's been a shitstorm about the recent changes to how banning works.

there's no other effective way for them to ban you. changing/masking your ip is so easy, and if they banned by gamertag people would just get new gamertags.

Yeah a friend of mine just got caught with his modded xbox. I laughed at him because he was one of those "You'll never get caught!" kinda people. He's buying a new xbox because he's "saved over $600" anyway.

Oh well. It's not worth the hassle. Just wait it out sir.

I was also interested in passing about buying a banned 360. I dont pirate, but I'm anti-online gaming as well as digital distribution so I figure this works for me if we see machines at the $50 price point or something obscene. Mostly I just need it to test games that I resell.

I've heard varying reports that some people's machines entirely borked. Like cant save, machine gets screwy while playing games, etc. I've also heard that everything is fine except you just cant sign onto Live. Maybe this actually differs from person to person.

Microsoft would open themselves up to massive liability if they actually broke people's machines, or made them unable to play games. I guarantee you, the worst shape these systems are in is they can't get online.

Is it really though? The people affected voided their warranty and are for the most part engaging in illegal activity. Seems like all bets could be off at that point.

At this point we get into "do I own the system or do I lease it from Microsoft, what are the rights, etc ad nauseum" and that seems a little more like a d&d thread to me.

But, my response to the O.P. is this.

You're going to spend what, 100 dollars? on a 360 that can only play games and has been stripped of all ability to interact with other 360s.

I absolutely, promise, guarantee, ABSOLUTELY CAN ASSURE YOU, that within an unreasonably short amount of time any 360 system you buy will die. If you buy a modded, banned, 360 from ebay you are forgoing a) MS warranty, b) store return policy and c) (if you use a card) credit card extended warranty. I speak from experience, I personally have returned 2 360s to their store of origin, and made good on enough MS 360 warranties that they sent me a free copy of Ninety Nine Nights, AND executed one highly illegal console heist all in the name of replacing my own personal 360 systems.. this is no internet fairy tale horror story, this is the truth. and in addition to my insane 6 replacements, BOTH of my room mates are on their 3rd 360.

You're exposing yourself to, what some would call an inevitable, foregone conclusion, all to save a few bucks, which YOU WILL pay back in terms of frustration and bullshit when this "great deal" you got turns out to be a lemon.

My father taught me a saying and from a very young age it has always rang true, and the saying is that "if it seems too good too be true, it is"

    TL;DR

Wait for a black Friday sale.

Microsoft also banned consoles back on the Xbox, so this isn't a new policy. Back then it just affected playing multiplayer, really, but nowadays there's so much DLC, game updates, and firmware updates that buying a banned system is just a bad idea.

You'll also be missing out on the many great XBox Live Arcade games, and some pretty cool Community Games.

Honestly, like everyone else has said, I don't think you can justify NOT spending the extra $100 or so to just get an arcade for $199. Although I'd personally get the one with a 60GB harddrive for $250 or whatever it is.

Black Friday is coming soon. Crazy deals will be had.

A ton of 360s have gone up on my local craigslist in the past couple of days. Some say they are banned, most don't.

It's funny, someone keeps posting an ad warning people about banned systems, and it keeps getting flagged (presumably by the people trying to offload their banned systems), and then keeps getting reposted.

Also, there have been a few unopened Arcades thrown up for around $160, which are obviously units that were bought with the $200 get a free $100 gift card sale.

So I don't mean to bump this, but it doesn't warrant it's own thread considering we have one relating to banned 360s already.

Anyway, I've been giving it some thought, and the more I think about it, the more I think one of these banned systems might be exactly what I need.

My goal is to view movies that I have ripped or downloaded (all legal, don't worry) on my TV (SD TV/SD content) without networking anything. My thought it that a cheap banned 360 and an external USB hard drive would be cheaper than putting together another system with TV-out, right?

I mean, if the only thing I plan on using this 360 for is movies played from an external USB drive, then a banned 360 might be the cheapest/best option in this scenario, depending on how much I could score one for (and I wouldn't even need a hard drive).

Does this sound legit, or am I missing any details?

That's another option, but the reason I was hoping I could do it with a 360 is because I could just plug the external USB drive into my PC, move the media I wanted, then plug it back into the 360 and Presto.

With an oXbox I have to get the network involved, and the positioning of my desk and TV make that a pain in the ass.

What I'll likely end up doing is dropping $60 on some used Dell P4 budget box I see on craigslist all the time, throwing in a cheap video card with S-video out, and getting a wireless mouse.

Not sure how recent this update is, but Microsoft even gives you instructions on how to use a USB or DVD/CD to update it offline yourself.

Of course, if the console-ban-o-matic code is buried in the update itself, which is likely, you just essentially bent over and lubed up. :P
