The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Just needs to do "internal lan" chat, no internet stuff and does not need to connect to AIM, Yahoo, etc. Something free and open source would be ideal.
Looking for something really lightweight and fast. We're using Spark now, the server is taking up 458M and client is taking up 72M... which is kind of ridiculous just to send less then a dozen messages back and forth per day. Less then 6 people use it.
I used to use a wee client called VCM years back for chat on our uni internal network (this was before ICQ days ) - dunno if theres a website for it anymore, or even what the last version is like, but it's freeware and still available on tucows and the like.
The last place I worked used XMPP (ie Jabber), set up with OpenFire for the server. I don't recall which client we used, but there's plenty of options out there. We had about 50 people using it at any given time, worked well, and was pretty easy to administrate.
