I'm running a ridiculous game of Delta Green and I'm all about unconventional roleplaying/puzzles/props to an extent. I'd like to be able to pick up something like a Rubik's cube and re-texture it to be some kind of maddening artifact that the players have to solve. I realize I could do all of this with numerical puzzles on a sheet of paper but I like the idea of giving the players something they can touch and interact with in the real world.
I'm really terrible with Rubik's cubes tho and I'm afraid a traditional one might be too hard/time consuming if my players are not skilled cubists. Does any one know of a simplified version of a Rubik's cube or have any suggestions for a semi-simple puzzle I can find at retail and re-texture easily?
Ah, I should have been more specific. What I'd like to do is take some epoxy modeling putty and cover each square in some kind of alien shape with an alien looking character in it and then paint it to look old and made of stone or whatever.
I want this thing to be as unrecognizable as possible while still being a viable puzzle.
EDIT: Oh shit, 2x2x2. That's pretty good. I might end up doing that. I still welcome any other ideas if any one is so inclined!
You could take a normal rubiks cube and paint all the squares in just two colors, then scramble it. That would probably be a ton easier.
I don't think it'd be anywhere near as easy as you think. At some point you're going to have to choose which color the middle sides are and those pieces aren't going to be any different to move. It's an easy move if you understand a rubik's cube...otherwise not so much.
I think they came out with a new sort of electronic rubik's cube that is supposed to be pretty easy. Plus nobody has probably seen one.
