Surprise it's the [Final Fantasy Thread] FF12 Retrospective
Mother of a FUCK do I wish that word was banned already. There is literally nobody in this thread who knows what it even means so they just toss it in at random times.
Tip: language evolves and changes and there's nothing you can do about it. Other peoples' use of emo is as correct as yours, especially since it's not in the dictionary.

"i do not make a mistake because it is impossible to be correct, i'm not dumb, YOU are dumb, neener-neener-neener"
possibly the most bullshit little nothing excuse ever

I didn't make any mistake. I get annoyed when people use that excuse too, but emo is literally a pop culture word with no 100% certain/accepted meaning.
I think it can be legitimately said that 'emo' has changed in meaning from 'some kind of genre of music, and maybe the people who listen to it' to 'something involving being depressed and suicidal and possibly Goth' and is possibly threatening to make the full transition to 'generic undefined meaningless bad' (a la 'gay.') Regrettable, but hard to legitimately deny. You may as well claim that the only spelling of color has a u.
More on topic... the other new non-old guy (Blue Shoulders) reminds me of Basch for some ungodly reason. I have this image of Basch with the same kind of unkempt long ass hair. Except he didn't have long hair. Am I going crazy, or did he have long ass hair like that at one point (during the prison break?)
Ah...so we have passed 9 very good FFs, to get to the best FF.
I know dude XI is the best
Lol no
It's funny...my brain just has a giant gap in it where XI is...like it refuses to believe that game exists.
Same here, but I have heard that it's a decent MMO in it's own right.
There are plenty of people playing it, that being said the people who play XI are probably going to play XIV?
The new FF MMO i don't know which Roman number it is.
I found X to be pretty mediocre. There were some good parts, some bad parts, but the final score was a resounding 'meh' for me.
I think part of my problem with it is that it feels like it takes forever to get going. I'm talking "Xenosaga Ep. I on the Woglinde" slow. It's a shame that the outsider vibe of the first few scenes, where Tidus gets sucked away, winds up in a ruin, is 'rescued' by Mad Max rejects speaking some fucking moon language and forcing him to work for them, isn't really followed up on. Instead, it reverts to a more generic anime feel, with Tidus acting like a moron for the majority of it.
Speaking of Tidus, the characters just didn't really do it for me in this one. They were better than VIII's, but still felt kind of bland to me on the whole. Lulu, Yuna, Tidus, and Kimhari just bored me to tears. Auron was somewhat interesting, and even though his flavor of badass is more than familiar by this point, he pulls it off well. I think I'm one of the few that likes Wakka. He's a small town, small-minded jock who clings to his religion in the face of the unknown. Probably the most realistic one of the group.
The pilgrimage is a classic trope, and handled pretty well here. My biggest gripe was Tidus not figuring out what was supposed to happen to Yuna at the end. I know this is meta of me, but magical girl + sacred duty + sacrifice = dead magical girl. It's just a given. That it took him so long to figure it out bugged me. I don't like having idiots for my main character.
I'm thinking I missed the point of the Jecht/Tidus relationship. About all I got was that Jecht was a bit of an asshole, and Tidus was a sensitive, whiny brat. I mean, I get that Tidus sees a different side of Jecht through the spheres, and learns to at least forgive him for his rough parenting, but is there more to it? It just seemed like an unnecessary layer to the story (how much of a stomach punch would it have been if Sin was actually the summoner, and therefore Yuna's father instead?).
Seeing all of this stuff about the international version reminds me... I live in the UK and did anyone else who played the international version find the introduction of the Dark Aeons to be COMPLETELY broken?
They show up once you get the airship and can finally go everywhere and do all the sidequests - but their positioning (such as Dark Valefor just outside Besaid) means you can't actually do many of the (relatively easy) sidequests without defeating the dark aeon first - which is very difficult if you're not particularly into overlevelling your party.
I remember being so hyped up on FFX, looking at pictures and drooling thinking "THIS is what the next FF will look like." And it lived up to my hype. I loved the game. I also loved the addition of voice acting. It just gave the characters so much more personality than they previously had.
All this FF talk is making me consider finishing XII. I'm a bit over half through, just after the Grand Poobah on the mountain guy got killed. I like Ivalice (although I like the Tactics/Vagrant Story eras better), and I like the characters, sans Vaan and Penelo. And I think I can get over my gambit hate as I've been playing more WoW lately. I just don't know if I want to make the plunge again.
Gentlemen, today is the day for the retrospective on the best Final Fantasy: Final Fantasy X.
Reasons why I love Final Fantasy X:
Setting and Story
Spira was a kickass world. I pretty much straight-away love anything with beach/aquatic themes, so as soon as I left Zanarkand and entered Spira, I got a good impression right from the start. Yes, it does kinda suck that there's no overworld, but when all the locales look as great as they did in FFX, I don't mind the trade-off. Between things like Yevon, Maesters, the Farplane, Summoners, etc., I thought they did a much better job than establishing their world than past Final Fantasies did. It was all done gradually, too. You see pyreflies for the first two-thirds of the game before you found out what they are; a stark contrast to, let's say, Final Fantasy VII, with Barret's explanation and overall plot setup in the elevator ("Hey, these machines are sucking mako out of the planet! And mako is the life force of the planet. Shinra is bad 'cause they're making these generators and they don't realize the planet's gonna die! Don't you care, man?"). Since Tidus is a newcomer to this world, the characters realize that even the most base things need to be described to him, and as such he reacts along with the player, a lot of times asking questions that I was thinking as the player. Also, the narrative framing device of a flashback that eventually catches up with the narrator? Awesome. In fact, I really need to see more fiction that does this. I can only think of a couple examples.
The Characters
Kimahri aside, 'cause every FF needs that character (Cait Sith, Irvine, Quina), I loved every character in X. Tidus was inquisitive enough without being annoying, and in a nice change of pace (though I'll give props to Zidane for this as well), he wasn't a brooding asshole. He had daddy issues to be sure, but his dad was kind of a dick, so hey. Every character feels like they have a good reason to be on this quest. Wakka is probably my favorite supporting character in an FF game, simply because I know quite a few people like him and he felt very real to me; a pretty cool guy in passing, but somewhat of a religious zealot underneath.
The Battle System
Second only to FFX-2's (are we having a retrospective on that?). I know a lot of people complained about its incredible ease at first (just match up the character to the enemy type!), but by mid-game even random encounters can start taking their toll on your party. It's also the best way to actually get you to use all of your characters in battle (again, except for Kimahri). Typically in an FF game I talk about who my main team was (Cloud/Tifa/Cid, etc.); I didn't even have an established team in X until more towards the endgame when everyone's Sphere Grid started crossing over and I was able to go for full customization. I also thought it was a really nice touch that save spots automatically heal you, and I'm hoping this is the case for FFXIII. Anything that saves me spending a bunch of time after battles in menus (Chrono Cross handled this nicely as well).
The Soundtrack
Okay, so this pretty much applies to every FF, but the soundtrack was wonderful, and as an added bonus you got to listen to it in the Sphere Theater, along with all the cinematics.
It Had a Ton of Stuff to Do
Which surprised me! Considering the lack of the overworld, I was amazed at the amount of sidequests in FFX. My complete save file at the end was significantly longer than my completed save files of other FF games. Some were pretty fun too. I really dug hunting monsters and fighting the optional bosses in the arena. I didn't even mind dodging the lightning or catching the butterflies, really. Fuck the chocobo race with the seagulls, but hey, they can't all be winners.
Auron is a Hardass
Seriously, look at this suave motherfucker:
His arm is not actually injured. He simply doesn't give a fuck to raise his other arm. He can take care of business one-handed.
Definitely my favorite FF. My only major flaw with the game is that Blitzball is a fucking travesty. Had they handled it like an actual sports mini-game instead of menu-driven bullshit, it could have been wonderful.
I really have very little to say about FFX. I bought it on release, played it to nearly 100% (I never finished the arena stuff or the lightning dodging), and quite enjoyed it...but nothing about it ever really stuck with me aside from really liking the changes to the combat system.
I definitely wasn't particularly attached to the characters or story, but I didn't find them bothersome or anything like that.
I think it was probably the first (and only) FF game that I liked without feeling particularly passionate about any one (or more) aspect of it.
I played FFX about 10% through, quit for a year, came back, and beat the last 90% in a burst. I rather enjoyed it. FFX-2 was freaking great, however. Keep meaning to go back through and play it again.
What I do wish is that we got the International versions, however. The Dark Aeons sound like fun. Did any English countries get the International ones?

From what I've heard it seems FFXIII auto-heals the whole party after each battle, apparently because it works better with the new battle system.
If they can make each actual battle difficult on its own rather than just using the fact that I was handicapped from the last battle, it would be a welcome change.

I believe I also read something about XP being limited, such that grinding is actually impossible. If that's the case, I'd be thrilled because that puts the control back in the developer's hands, and that means they know exactly how strong you are at every point in the game. That would make creating very deliberate levels of difficulty much easier.
Also, apparently no one drops money, you have to sell shit you find to get money.

Have you played Lost Odyssey? It's got the same EXP system. You can only gain a certain amount of levels depending on how far along in the game you are.

Ehhhh, I dunno if I like that idea. It really depends on how the inventory and UI works. Cause if I have to sit there can scroll through and click "sell" on every individual item I want to sell that's bad.

XII did it and it was fine. I don't imagine they'd just forget they knew how to do it.

Ah Okay then, I didn't play 12.

I generally don't like "sell the shit you find" instead of things not dropping money directly. Probably because I always just rationalized "why random monsters have gold" as "you're selling the shit you find only they cut out the boring part of actually selling it all"

Do you know how many fucking terrible Paine cosplays there are out there?
Fine. Here's cosplay of Paine cosplaying as Rikku (Thief Paine):
I'm really surprised that there isn't more Auron fanart. I suppose I'll keep looking.

There is a thirteenth zodiac house called Ophiuchus which astrology ignores.
I don't remember which one it was, but one of them taught me about Serpintarius, which I'm pretty sure can be interchanged with Ophiuchus.
