Starting a podcast, need mic advice

Ok, so some friends and me have been trying to start a podcast. Right now we're using a Vista laptop with Audacity and... two Singstar mics. The obvious problem right now is that the audio quality kind of sucks.

At the moment, we've just been doing some test runs to get a feel for doing a cast, but we plan on publishing it soon and are looking at upping the audio quality before we put ourselves out there. Basically, we need to know two things:

1. What are some good podcast mics? Is it better to go directional or omnidirectional. For the record, we are planning on having 4 people on this cast, and currently our recording studio is a dining room table. I'm thinking that 4 directional mics probably would provide better sound in this instance.
2. Audacity (and I guess Windows in general) has a problem with having multiple USB mics plugged in. We can't seem to get more input devices connected and we hear this needs to be done through a mixer. I'm just wondering if you guys have any suggestions/advice on this?

Anyways, thanks for any advice you guys might have. I know the collective knowledge of the PA forum is one that really knows their shit, so I figured this was the best place to ask.
