Overlord Complete Pack on Steam for $8.75
The_SpaniardIt's never lupinesIrvine, CaliforniaRegistered Userregular
You get the enhanced edition of Overlord, Overlord: Raising Hell (basically the enhanced edition) and Overlord 2 for the low low price of $8.75. Both games for under 10 bucks doesn't seem like a bad deal, who's getting it?
Oh yeah, also feel free to discuss the games here, it might help push some people over the edge.
I myself had always heard that it was a flawed but fun series that scratches an itch left in the chasm between Dungeon Keeper games. Even if we never get another one of those this is supposedly a decent alternative.
Just for the record, Overlord bears absolutely no resemblance to Dungeon Keeper in any way, shape or form. I've heard that comparison being made since before the game was released, but it is a complete and utter falsity. The games are nothing alike, outside of maybe the subject material, but even then I wouldn't compare them directly.
Overlord is like Fable with a more humorous tone, and a focus on rudimentary troop management (akin to Sacrifice, or more recently, Brutal Legend). I personally did not enjoy the first game that much, mostly due to horrendous controls, but the sequel is supposedly improved, and you can't really go wrong at that price.

Overlord is about as close a direct Pikmin-ripoff as you could hope to find, really. Makes you wonder what other genre-bending Nintendo games publishers have yet to copy!
Regarding the controls - anybody know if they're both 360-controller compatible? I kept on struggling with badly-ported KBaM controls, then just caved and bought a pad. I might feel like a traitor, but it's made console ports infinitely more bearable.

Yep. Just set it to gamepad in the options.
I'm a bit into the first game and some enemies absolutely slaughter my minions. Do I get upgrades for them at some point, other than them equipping random stuff?
I'm playing through Overlord: Dark Legend for the Wii and I must say I think I'm enjoying it more than the first game. The controls for the minions is much more intuitive thanks to the pointer, and the graphics don't really suffer that much on the Wii thanks to the artstyle.
If you liked Overlord and have a Wii, I'd recommend checking it out.
EDIT: Also, if your wondering, the game seems to be a prequel (though it isn't directly spelled out), following an earlier Overlord as he battles various characters from Fairy Tales, as well as the prerequisite Elves and Dwarves.

Well I guess it bears mentioning that the comparison is not about gameplay, but the fact that they are both about dark humor and being the bad guy.
Hmm. I really liked the first one, but I never got the second. Something they changed about the controls didn't sit right with me. For ten bucks, though, I'm willing to give it a shot. What do I need to do to use a 360 controller for this? Do I need to buy some kind of adapter?

Since Raising Hell is the tag added for the PS3 version is it safe to assume that the PC version named that has the PS3 enhancements?

Wireless controller, you'll need to buy an overpriced wireless adapter. At least where I live, it's cheaper to just buy a wired 360 controller - you get 3m of cable. Either way, you'll just need to install the official microsoft drivers and you're golden.
As for the 'Raising Hell' aspect, I think people were referring to the new things added into the original for the PS3 release - most crucially the minimap! Any word of whether those were included?
I'd never heard of Overlord... but I think I'm going to break my NaNoWriMo "no games until the book is over" rule and grab it while I can. It looks like a lot of fun!

Very important question: Is the Steam version sans-Starforce? That's what the retail version used (they surprisingly disclose it on the box or manual) and as a result I have an unplayed copy on the shelf.
It doesn't mention any 3rd-party DRM on any of the store pages, so I'm guessing not. Steam games typically have 3rd-party DRM listed now (Starforce, SecuROM etc.)

Alright guys you have to help me out here. When I start Overlord or Raising Hells, it will get through the loading screen and then crash with the message "Game application has stopped working" Running 64-Bit Vista, all my drivers are updated, and have no clue what do do

I bought the first one for the 360 for $20 a year ago. Never finished it. I really don't remember where I left off, though I think it wasn't very long after getting the final minions. It's a fun game, but for whatever reason I just lost interest and stopped playing it. I recall it getting really repetitive, but I'm not sure if that's a fair criticism. What game isn't, after all? Less than $10 for both games seems like a fantastic deal though, especially considering the second game came out, what, at the beginning of the summer?
I'd totally jump on the Crysis deal if I didn't already have Warhead. Though upon further investigation, you can buy either game for $15 instead of getting both through the weekend package. I think I'll get on that.

Try setting it into XP compatibility mode.
I don't think Steam lets you put games in compat modes.
Xtarath, I think there's something broken in your OS. First Mass Effect, now Overlord?
For those who were wondering, I tried setting Overlord to low on the config, and it worked! Which was odd, because now I can set it to whatever detail I want.
So I couldn't resist it, I went ahead and snagged the set. For a bit under 9$, it was a steal. I'm going through the first game now, though I have to stop myself to continue writing. It's a lot of fun, and I can definitely see the comparisons to Pikmin being relevant. It's like a violent pikmin.
It's definitely been a blast thus far... I haven't been able to play since this morning due to NaNoWriMo concerns, but it provided a couple good hours already. I guess I look at it that "hey, for 8.75 I could rent two movies" or "for 8.75 I can play two games until I get bored with them". If the latter is available, the latter will always win.
(Not that I rent movies anymore really... Netflix killed that. But the last time I went to Blockbuster, I remembered the rentals costing somewhere in the range of $4.00, which really puts the cost of entertainment in perspective. Games will almost always beat that in terms of price to value. )
Yeah, I am such a whore for steam sales and I had never played these until now, but I'm really enjoying the first one. How is the second one in comparison?
Okay, I just finished Dark Legend (aka Overlord Wii) and here's my thoughts
Cons
-Kinda buggy. The game froze on me no less than 4 times in my playthrough. Like I had to unplug the Wii froze. Also there were several other glitches that, while didn't impact the game, did stand out (characters saying the wrong dialog, minions getting stuck, items that I had picked up already appearing in the spot they first appeared as a phantom object)
-Short: Not even a 10 hour game; and extremely linear with not a lot of side stuff to do
-It's definitely a lot simpler than the first Overlord. There's no evil/good(or evil/less evil) schism, there's no castle customization, all minions draw from the same pool of lifeforce.
-Easy as shit. I think there was only once where I lost all of my minions. Enemies aren't that hard to beat, and you get so much money you can fully upgrade yourself at whim, just as soon as you find the next forge.
Pros
-Minions a lot smarter now (they don't blindly follow you into water unless they're blues, for example)
-The control scheme is fantastic.
-The story is about on par with the first overlord.
So I take back my previous opinion; this is really only worth a rental unless you really, really like Overlord. It makes an excellent intro to the series though, and not just because it's a prequel!

Dude, it's nine bucks for the whole pack, just get it again
The original wasn't that good, and my computer probably won't be able to play Overlord II.

I might get the pack anyway, just to have them on Steam.
Raising Hell was DLC on the 360, too. It's not specific enhancements to anything, it's an expansion. So every version has Raising Hell.

Oh, I didn't know about that.
Yeah specifically an onscreen mini-map. Well I guess at this price it really doesn't matter.

Edit: Lowering the resolution to 800 by 640 and the graphics quality to low actually gives me a decent framerate! I might get this.

8.75 is just too hard to resist
