Hello dear readers, I would like to tell you a story.
Yesterday Tycho and I were in the process of writing today's comic when something very interesting happened. Now you should know by now that our names are not Gabe and Tycho. My name is Mike and Tycho's is Jerry. The characters in the comic strip have always been loosely based on us but I know perfectly well that Jerry does not look at animal porn and he knows I don't fantasize about spiderman. When we're writing the comic strip we talk about things Tycho and Gabe might do, or things that might happen to them. They are separate from us. At least I thought they were.
During the strip writing process Jerry suggested off handedly that perhaps "there should be more dialogue between the guy and Mike in panel 2." Not the guy and Gabe, the guy and Mike. I shot him a surprised look and he gave me a nervous laugh. Obviously we had both heard what he had said. I can not recall a time when he has ever accidentally used my name instead of Gabe's. How interesting that the first time he does this is in a strip which depicts Gabe as a fucking moron.
The take away here, is that he is a horrible person and not my best best best friend. He may not come to my birthday party or partake in its many clowns and bouncy castle. He is a foul puppet whose strings are pulled by an scheming devil.
It was supposed to make quadriplegics and the like be able to play video games.
That one didn't go off of brain impulses, however, it read minute movements in the face muscles.
I also didn't work, like, at-all.
I think I remember seeing that (or something very much like it) on GamePro TV years ago, with JD Roth as the host. Seemed awfully impressive at the time.
This brain thing, though? Not so sure.
But a major win to the third panel on this comic:
VINDICATION!
Hello Waterface on
Welcome to Miami Beach, ladies and gentlemen. Everything is cheaper than it looks.
Please take my advice.

Also, Gabe's post is hilarious. It's a sad day when Jerry is not allowed to come to Mike's birthday party.
Maybe I can come instead?

If anyone is interested, I did research in this area and I can tell you that the technology is no where near ready for anything as complex as gaming. Getting a normal, mentally healthy person to move a mouse cursor around gets researchers dancing in their chairs.
The only way you would get close (maybe, perhaps, with years of training) to the fidelity required is by sticking metal probes into your brain. I don't think we're quite ready for that.

I like the comic because I think the punchline is more about Tycho than Gabe.
I'm also amused by the more random facial expression's Gabe ("Mike"?) has been using on Tycho. Today's I only remember seeing before in the sledding strip:
I would not call the technology "gimmicky"
As to me that implies that it could have only the briefest of popularity before being forgotten forever
Eventually I think the costs will come down, the technology will be refined and it will be used for games people actually want to play.
It's just not going to be this particular machine and probably not this particular company
"Yep, kids, your old man used to have to control Ratchet using a joystick.
What do you mean, `What's a joystick?' I raised you better than that!"

You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy!
People have been working on stuff like this for 30 years. 99 times out of 100 you're like "huh that's... kinda neat.. but it doesn't work very well does it" and then you never hear about it again.
See, we wouldn't need retellings of stories like this if they just flipped on the mic every once in a while and released a podcast.
Yeah, every so often they'll do one and Tycho will say, "And we'll keep doing one every week!". 6 months later, repeat.
I love the podcasts, but I think they must inhibit the comic creation process in some way to make them uncomfortable to do.
Also, IMO, it's often the "less good" strips that have podcasts, possibly for this reason? However, listening to the podcast usually makes the strip enjoyable because you hear the whole process and them laughing about it. It's just that I haven't yet had the experience of both awesome strip -> "and here's the podcast!"

I think that's because some of the best ones seem like they were thought up of while Gabe/Mike was at home or something, and thought it'd be funny. Very offhanded, sometimes. I do like to hear their process though, like the whiteboard of phrases that eventually come into use in a strip.
And come on, the Big Birds Deep Holes one was pretty awesome.
