I'm looking to convert some rater large Quicktime files in to flash (flv). I've been looking everywhere for a free converter to allow me to do this (much like youtube does, but these are a half hour long) but to no avail.
I'm using a Mac, so that would be preferred, but I also have access to a PC.
Sorry to thread jack but this is right up this alley.
I need to convert a relatively large number of (completely legal, home video) .avi files into .wmv so I can stream them through my 360.
The free-er the better, thanks!
There's a Xilisoft product for that too. The Xilisoft Zune Video Converter will do it, but there's another suite that will convert from any format to any other I believe.
Just google "AVI to WMV." There should be a slew of programs.
Is that Xilisoft video converter essentially lossless? the quality I'm starting with isn't perfect already, I wouldn't be looking forward to too much degradation.

Er...you aren't downsampling anything...you're just converting from one form to another. I don't know what kind of data your .avi holds, but it is most likely already not lossless. If you do a 1:1 conversion, though, and don't fiddle with target bitrates or anything, your .avi and .wmv files should be of the same quality, but likely different filesizes.
I'm not an expert on how it works though, so that's just guesstimation based on my experiences and what I think I know about it...don't take that for absolute truth.
Using the free trial of the program, it shrank the resolution, and added an off tinny-ness to the audio track, I'm fiddling with some options now, but we'll see how it works out.

I'm sure there are more apps out there, but that's one.
