I'm trying to get people to join my Facebook group... but it's not easy. I tried a site called FacebookBay, but I don't think it works. I wish I could advertise for my group, but most ads cost money, and my job as a volunteer worker doesn't pay me any money at all.
Rename your group, "If 1,000,000 people join this group they will add a dislike button" for a week. Then change it back to whatever real purpose it has.

Or "LARGEST GROUP EVAR ATTEMPT C'MON EVERYONE JOIN"
I think facebook groups are like any other groups or webpages on the web. You'll need to spread the word and the market. A facebook group I joined which is exploding is the Gamer's Voice. It's a group that is vocalizing concerns about gaming restricitons in the UK. The group itself isn't offering much but it's growing incredably fast. I was turned onto it by a news article I read on Game Politic News. After that I wanted to join their cause, so I joined the group.
The group itself looks like it exploded due to contraversy but it's sustaining itself because it appeals to gamers socializing. I hope this will help you understand why groups grow.

If you build it, and it doesn't suck, they will come.
If you build it and they don't come, well ... :P
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Second, make sure all of your promotional materials mention your facebook page and whatnot.
Third, make sure your facebook page offers something special - deals, information, whatever else you think might be nice.
I get so tired of being spammed with that one.
