Looking for a good printer/scanner

Somehow I've managed to make it through my first year as a graphic design student without actually owning a printer or scanner. I'm not particularly looking forwards towards another year of the same. And so, I am wondering if anyone can recommend me a good, affordable printer/scanner, or give me some advice as to what to look for.
I need something which has good (or at least, a bit better than average) printing quality, since my course requires that I do quite a bit of it, and it does matter how well it is printed. A similar thing can be said for the scanner. At the same time, I'm not a rich person, so I would like something that I might be able to afford. Also note my location (Australia) which might affect pricing and availablility.
