Casual 360 Games

So my mother in law purchased a 360 for her family and is quite enamored with it overall. However, while her husband and son are having fun with MW2, she still hasn't come across any games that she really likes aside from Uno and asked if my wife or I knew of any games that she might like more. Aside from Viva Pinata I can't think of much and was wondering if anyone could give any recommendations. Downloadable games are fine too as she's already picked up a points card that she's intent on using.

1 vs 100 so hard. If it's back on that is (it had a beta and I think it's meant to come back up around now).

That's if she has gold, I'm guessing she does given her husband/son have MW2?

'Splosion Man on XBLA is pretty challenging, but rarely frustrating, and easily one of my favourite games of the year, I haven't tried The Maw (made by the same people), but I've heard it's pretty good. Oh, and Peggle, but you may never hear from her again.

Also, the Lego games like Lego Star Wars/Indiana Jones are great for all ages.

    Castle Crashers, maybe?

Maybe an arcade-y driving game like DiRT?

Yeah, I was gonna suggest Castle Crashers. I'm not much of a gamer myself, but I got to play this game because a friend suggested it to me at a party. It's a simple side scroller but with the 4 player capability it is great for team building skills. Also it's really addictive and fun. So if she's into the side scrollers it comes highly recommended.

Another suggestion is gemotry wars. This is like astroids. You move your little space ship around and blow up aliens. Fun simple pick-up and play. Also you get to try to beat your last score which adds an emphasis of accomplishment.

Civilization Revolution is great for non-violent gaming. The Lego games, as mentioned above, are also really good as casual pickups. There are also a lot of great games on Live Arcade in the Card or Puzzle category that would probably work. Settlers of Catan, Kingdom for Kieflings (I love this game, far more than I would ever admit face to face), etc.

I'll second this, Geometry Wars 2 is fantastic.

The Scene It games with the buzzer controllers are loads of fun, especially for people who aren't necessarily into video games.

I'll second Puzzle Quest. My Mom steals my DS whenever I go home so she can play Puzzle Quest. :P

Puzzle Quest is definitely a legitimate suggestion. I think Castle Crashers could be a good choice as it can get all of them in on it.

Arcade titles I recommend for casuals:

Bejewled (Puzzle Quest as well, good gateway game 8-))
    Diner Dash
    Interpol
    Wallace & Gromit series
    Tower Bloxx
    Pinball FX
    Peggle

Several people mention Geo Wars. I believe it is a great game, by after watching about 10 non-gamers play, I'd say avoid it. The dual analog controls are very challenging for the uninitiated, and that game can be very frustrating at first.

Alright, I sent her a message recommending Bejewled, Puzzle Quest, Peggle, 1 vs. 100, and Castle Crashers as games she might like on Marketplace. I also recommended her Viva Pinata and the Lego Games as games she could pick up at the store.

What are your mother's literary interests? Does she read? Sci-fi, fantasy, romance?

    e: In law.

ee: You may also consider something like a light-hearted roleplaying game.

I've been working in casual games a fair while. Let me say, that unless the mother in law in question is unusually geeky, games like Splosion Man, Castle Crashers, Geometry Wars etc will NOT appeal. They are just too squarely aimed at the 18-30 yr old male market to be really fun for a middle-aged woman. Sure, some will like them, in the same way some middle-aged ladies like skateboarding or gory horror movies. Either way, it's unusual.

It would be better to investigate the vast range of casual games actually aimed at the female/older market.

    I suggest:
    Diner Dash
    Bejeweled 2
    Zuma
    Peggle
    Jewel Quest

... plus anything from the card and board game section.

Yeah, I tossed Castle Crashers in the message saying she'd probably only like it along with the Legos games when playing with her husband and son.

My wife is obsessed with Viva Pinata. She's also a fan of Zuma and will play Carcassonne but prefers the board game.

That's a good idea seeing how he said that she likes UNO. Maybe try Carcasonne or Settlers of Catan (based off of good board games.)

    I love this game!

Thirding. It's like an RTS, except instead of worrying about killing lots of mans you just get to chill out in your little village.
