I'm using MS Security Essentials on three W7 PC's currently with no issues. One of these is my gaming PC that has a shit ton of stuff of Steam. With many AV's you end up getting a lot of false positives from Steam stuff it seems. AVG, Kaspersky, and ESET being the 3 that I recall hearing about.
Anyway +3 for MS Security Essentials here for free AV. Clean simple interface, doesn't annoy you, just works.

I use MS Security Essentials and I really like it. I used to use NOD32, but MSSE is just as lightweight (I know, shocking coming from MS). It never gets in my way, doesn't use that many system resources and just sort of works. I recommend it to everyone that needs good AV software now.
I didn't know MS came out with free AV software. That's kinda cool. Too bad they didn't include it with Win7 for the n00bs.
They can't, people keep throwing anti-trust suits at them over browsers and whatnot.
They could, provided it had a clear and easy to find uninstall option (just like they have to do with IE now). The anti-trust suits weren't because MS packaged IE with Windows, it was because (prior to the lawsuits) removing IE was nearly impossible. Explorer/Internet Explorer were very tightly coupled, and to even begin to remove IE required registry hacking, mucking around in safe mode, and untold other hurtles to jump.

Not to hijack the thread, but does MS Security Essentials have any kind of heuristics detection? Or is it purely signature based?
My Vista Home Premium PC came with Panda Antivirus preinstalled.
It messed with some of the windows updates, preventing certain programs from executing with no warning, took me hours upon hours to figure out what was happening. I had to completely uninstall before I could run them.
Don't know how widespread it is though.

No idea. I don't believe MS wrote the engine themselves, I believe it's licensed (maybe from Kapersky?). I could probably find out, but off the top of my head, I have no idea.

They definately bought existing and threw their name on it. It was solid software before they bought it. Thats all I remember. I dont know how it has preformed since.

You're thinking of Windows Defender which was formally GIANT AntiSpyware.

Actuully MS did write it themselves.
