Welcome to the second Playstation Store thread!

Wherein we discuss things purchased/obtained/related to, obviously, the Playstation Store and Network.

In the same sentiment as the last thread, I would like to state that I'd love to see this continue to be a community project. If you have any info on upcoming PS Store downloads, please feel free to let me know either through the thread or PM, and I will add it to the OP. Also, if you'd like your PSN ID in the OP, please IM me or ask to included in the thread, with your PSN ID, region and whether or not you have a headset. If there's anything incorrect, let me know.

Need some help? Here's a few Guides!
How do I buy things from the PS Store for my PSP?
Unco-ordinated recently covered this (I wasn't sure if people not knowing was a widespread issue), so I'll let his post here speak for him:
There's three ways to get PSP stuff. The first is to download it to a PS3 and then copy it across to the PSP, the second is to go directly online through a wireless connection and the third is to use the Media Manager.

Go to this website, download and install the Media Manager. Plug your PSP into your PC/Laptop and go to the PS Store within the Media Manager. If you don't have a PSN ID, you'll need to sign up for one.
I Wanna Get a Japanese PSN ID!
Well, that's not too difficult! Here's a couple of handy guides to help. A Video guide is behind the spoiler, and following it is a Step-by-Step Typed one for those of you who can't/don't look at youtube regularly!

Typed Steps for those who don't want to watch a video or something:
*) I advise to get a pen and paper for writing down what information you give (PSN ID and Password, email used, along with your security question and answer if you're so inclined.) It's not a necessary step. However, unless you can read Japanese (which if you can, you shouldn't need a guide) it will be incredibly difficult to recover your ID or password if you don't remember it otherwise.
1) Go to the Users Slot and make a New User. Name doesn't matter, and it can be changed later.
2) Sign into the new user.
3) Go to the Network tab and select Sign up for Playstation Network.
4) At the starting screen, select "Create a New Account" and then on the second screen, select Continue.
5) On the third screen, change the country to Japan, which will automatically change the language to Japanese.
6) On the same screen, skip the second slot (The language slot) and go directly to birthdate. A birth year of 1990 or below is advised, to avoid parental controls over what you can get on the store. The Month and Date thereafter don't matter, so pick any numbers.
7) The third button (from left to right) is the Next button. Hit it.
8) This screen is the User Agreement Screen. Get to the bottom row of buttons and again hit Next.
9) This is your PSN ID and Password screen. The first slot is for an email address. It does not have to be a valid address. When you enter it, a screen will pop up; this is just informing you that this email address will be used for this account.
10) The next slot is for your password. Any password that abides by the following rules is fine.
- The password must contain at least six characters.
- The password must contain at least one letter and at least one number.
- The password must not contain a letter or a number used three or more times in a row.
- The password must not be the same as your sign-in ID or online ID.
- You must enter the password correctly in two fields.
- Letters are case-sensitive.
The slot following is for confirming your Password, so reenter it.
*) The checkbox here is for saving your password. Up to your discretion.
11) Last is your secret question. In the box provided, type whatever. If you want to try and write it down, just in case, go for it. Afterwards, hit next.
12) Your PSN ID screen. As long as the ID you want is not taken and follows the rules below, it should be fine.
- The online ID must be 3 to 16 characters and can consist of letters, numbers, hyphens (-) and underscores (_).
- The online ID will be publicly displayed in the Playstation(R)Network.
- Do not use any personally identifying information for your online ID.
- You cannot change your online ID after it has been created.
You may have to attempt several IDs. After you do, hit Next.
13) Name Screen. Enter whatever for the first and second boxes. The third is Gender, and is optional, so skip it if you like. Hit Next.
14) The Address Screen. At the first box, enter five random numbers. At the second box, it opens a menu. Select the second option. For the four remaining boxes, insert whatever you'd like and then hit next.
15) This is the Email Confirmation screen. Do not check the box. If you do, it'll send an email to your (possibly non-existent) email for account confirmation. Obviously, if the email doesn't succeed, you won't be able to use your PSN. Hit Next.
16) This is the Final Confirmation screen. Just scroll down and hit Next. From there, you might be taken to the store. (You'll have to sign in first.) If so, look around or exit out if you like, if not, do whatever, because now you have a Japanese PSN!

Alright, have at it, guys. If there's anything I missed or should include in the OP, feel free to let me know in the thread or with a PM!

So, hey, you guys remember Mario Wynands?

He was the dude from Sidhe Interactive (which I guess is just Sidhe now) who used to post on the forums back when GripShift was first released for the PSP (this was back sometime in mid to late 2005).

I was just lurking back then, but I still enjoyed reading his posts, since it was nice that one of the high level individuals in the company was giving a direct line to gamers in terms of questions, comments, and complaints.

Einhander was doing some writing for an amateur videogaming website at the time, and managed to talk him into an e-mail interview (basically, he emailed Mario a bunch of questions and then Mario emailed him back a bunch of answers) and I found it. It's pretty long, but here it is if anyone is interested:
    Hi Jeff,

Sorry for the huge delay on this - it was a hectic second half of 2005.

Answers below. Please respond to this email if you get it as sometimes
Hotmail thinks I am a spammer for some reason.

    Name: Mario Wynands
Position(s) you hold at Sidhe: Managing Director

1.) Let's start off with a few questions about Sidhe Interactive. When did
    you guys get together?

Sidhe Interactive was started in May 1997, founded by myself, Tyrone McAuley
and Stuart Middleton. However, it wasn't until a couple of years after that
before we got our first break in the form of a PlayStation development
    contract.

2.) How many members are on the team?

Sidhe currently has a team of around 50 people, made up of programmers, 3D
artists, concept artists, animators and testers.

3.) How does your position affect games in development?

Having been a Producer or Executive Producer across multiple projects, my
role has been to help manage and direct the titles we have developed.

As the company continues to grow, however, I'll be increasingly less
directly involved in title development as my business development,
marketing, and strategic planning responsibilities grow. That's an exciting
shift for me as it provides a whole new range of opportunities and
    challenges.

4.) I've noticed that Sidhe's previous games are all Euro-specific Rugby
titles. GripShift is your first PSP title, but it's also your first title
aimed at a more worldwide audience. Who made the decisions to develop a game for a new platform, and for a new audience in North America?

We have worked on a range of different titles across genres and platforms
which have shipped around the world, but its fair to say our main success to
date has been the Rugby League sports series which has a predominantly
    Australasian and UK based audience.

Our intention has always been to develop original titles that appeal to a
worldwide audience. The PSP is the ideal platform for this goal as it
provides a powerful, consistent and inexpensive global platform to develop
    for.

5.) GripShift is definitely not a standard racing game, nor is it a standard puzzle game. Was there any resistance in your team or from the moneybags higher up to bring such an inventive and new (and untested) idea to the public?

There was never any resistance from any party around the cross genre nature
of the title. In fact, all partners were very supportive of our efforts to
strive for new forms of gameplay when the market today is so dominated by
    sequels and ports.

6.) Who came up with the core idea for GripShift? Was it an individual or a
team effort? What were the inspirations behind it?

Andy Satterthwaite was the Producer and Designer for GripShift, as well as
coming up with the original concept. Andy is best known as the Producer of
a number of successful titles including Wipeout XL, Colony Wars, and NGEN
    Racing.

Andy was inspired by existing titles such as Super Monkey Ball and the
classic Stunt Car Racer, as well as childhood memories of slot car racing.
You can see those influences have carried through to the final product.

7.) One of the coolest features of GripShift is the interactive level
editor. Tracks can be designed in-game and then uploaded to the net for
anyone to download and try to beat your times. Was this a feature that was
always in, or was it something that the team thought would be cool to add
    later on in development?

It was always our intention to include the level editor as a way of
fostering a community. In fact, the leve editor that ships with the game is
the very same editor that the level designers used to create all the levels
    that ship with the game.

8.) To shift a little toward the hardware side of things, how different was
it coding a game for the PSP, when your previous experience was with the
PS2, X-Box, and PC. Was it an easy transition?

Like any new console, it has its quirks and there is a definite learning
curve. Having previously developed for both PlayStation and PlayStation 2
did help accelerate the process though.

9.) Were there any aspects of GripShift that had to be cut due to a lack of
time or limitations of the hardware?

There were a lot of ideas that came up over the course of development, but
inevitably you have to work with the budget and time constraints.

Hopefully the title sells enough that we get the opportunity to work on a
sequel, and put in all those ideas that didn't make it the first time
    around.

10.) How long did GripShift take to develop? Is development time on the PSP
considerably different from home consoles? Now that the team has gotten it's feet wet with an impressive first PSP title, will future games on the platform be easier to develop?

GripShift was in development for around 18 months. That's similar to other
console and PC products we have developed in the past although the team size
for GripShift was a lot smaller than usual.

It has been great working with the hardware so far. From what we have
learnt about PSP with the development of GripShift, we'll be able to do much
more with the platform in the future.

11.) Moving on to a darker aspect of PSP development, How do you feel piracy
has affected the success of GripShift?

Piracy on any platform is a hotly debated topic. Its difficult to
accurately gauge the true cost of piracy, but it certainly doesn't help the
industry in any way as it tends to devalue all products and negatively
    affect sales.

Certainly it has been very disappointing to see so many downloads of
GripShift taking place. Literally tens of thousands of copies have been
downloaded so regardless of your view on piracy it would be hard to argue we
haven't lost some sales in amongst that. That is disappointing for a team
that worked so hard for so long to bring something new and original to the
    platform.

12.) Do you think piracy as it stands now on the PSP has dissuaded other
developers (especially first-time projects) from developing PSP games?

I think the effects of PSP piracy are yet to be seen. The swiftness with
which pirates have succeeded compromising the UMD format and successive
firmware versions has surprised many in the industry, with the cracking of
2.0 being a particularly large blow.

13.) How has it affected Sidhe in their decisions in which games you'll
    release, and on which platforms?

For us, the PSP still represents a great platform to develop for and an
    opportunity to prosper.

However, like most developers and publishers for PSP we will be carefully
following the piracy situation, and adjusting our plans as appropriate.

14.) I've noticed that you are very active in the gaming community via
posting on several gaming messageboards. This in turn gives gamers a direct
line to a developer to give praise or complaint. This also gives you and
Sidhe a direct line to gamers to find out what they do or do not like about
GripShift. In turn, this also let's other people who may not express
interest in the game normally to catch some info that might pique their
curiousity. Very few developers are that hands-on with the gaming public,
and it is greately appreciated when one takes the time as you have. Was this
a concious decision by the team, or is this something that you do on your
own time to promote the game?

Its always been important to Sidhe to get comprehensive feedback regarding
our products, and to engage with the gaming community. To us the internet
and gaming forums provide mechanisms to open a direct dialogue with a high
volume of gamers. We can gather a wide range of honest opinions about our
products, and have the opportunity to dig down further if we have to so we
can really explore what did or didn't work in our titles. It also allows us
to provide up to date information or answer questions for gamers who may be
    interested in our products.

In this way, we are not reliant on sales information or focus groups alone
to determine whether our ideas are being well received within the gaming
    community.

Its definitely very resource and time intensive, but an invaluable resource.
Luckily I don't mind spending my spare time scouring the web for
    conversations about our products.

15.) Sidhe interactive is headquartered in new Zealand. How do you think
gamers tastes in NZ and Australia differ compared to the rest of the world?

Australasian gamer tastes tend to be a strange blend of both US and European
tastes, as our general media is influenced by both these regions.

For example, we tend to be into a broad range of sports games like the
Americans, but also like deeper games like RPGs and strategy titles popular
    in Europe.

16.) What side of the road do you drive on over there?

    Left.

17.) GripShift is an amazing first effort. The game combines driving,
platform, action and puzzle components together to bring a fresh experience
to the PSP. You can customise your car, as well as design your own tracks in
a variety of environments and upload them for others to play, as well as
download their creations. You can also play 4-player wireless over an ad-hoc
connection using these same tracks. Is there any more information about the
game that you would like readers to know before we close?

I think the main thing I like about GripShift as a product is that it has
been specifically designed for the PSP platform. Short load times,
colourful bright graphics, modular burst gameplay, ad hoc wireless, custom
and downloadable levels, and a variety of different gameplay modes and bonus
games all add together to give you a highly variable, and enjoyable gaming
experience on the go. There is always something to play in GripShift no
matter what your mood and regardless of whether you only have 60 seconds or
    over an hour to spare.

GripShift has been a great experience from a game development perspective,
and we really hope that those have supported us by purchasing the title
    really enjoy it too.

So, I figured, if the guy was so open about answering questions then, maybe he still is? The base reason I emailed him was because I had to sell a PSP a couple of years ago to pay rent, and a couple of months ago rebought a new one, and wanted to pick up another copy of GripShift. Since I can't a copy in stores anywhere (new or used), I thought "Damn, that would really be convenient if it was on the PSN". ANd then I thought, "Man, why aren't there a ton of old games on PSN?"

So, I emailed him some questions about PSP games and Legacy UMD releases on the PSN store (basically, why we don't see more companies releasing legacy UMD titles, are there are a cost issues, licensing issues, or royalty issues, etc), and he emailed me back this:
    Hi Eric,

I'll have to be quick as I am about to jump on a flight, but the high level
answer for legacy games is licensing is the key issue in a lot of cases.
Many development, publishing, and licensing agreements won't have covered
the option for a digitally distributed version. The cost of redoing the
agreement, even if it can be redone, is likely to be prohibitive.

In the case of new games, the process for turning a UMD into a download I
believe is relatively easy. Reasons slowing the flow of titles to download
would include licensing (especially for game in dev for a while),
distribution rights issues, content rights issues, and pressure from
retailers. In some cases, the cost of producing, submitting and managing a
downloadable version may not be worth the likely revenue (which may also be
the case for legacy games that don't have any legal barriers).

Hope that helps. Feel free to share the answers.

    Regards

    Mario Wynands

    Managing Director
    Sidhe

So that just kind of confirms what I (and likely everyone else) figured was the root cause behind the (relatively) small amount of UMD legacy releases hitting PSN. It kinda sucks, but it makes sense I guess.

And props to the guy for answering my question within a ten minute period, as I think it's Balls Early AM over in New Zealand right now.

I have purchased the PSN Resident Evil 2, and it is indeed the Dual Shock version.

A little help for people who got the game, you can't select Disc 2 from the change disc option. The only way to play Disc 2 is to press the PS button and go down to Restart Game. From there you can select Disc 2, and be able to play as Clair.

My understanding concerning the Photofast adaptors is that it is absolutely the cheapest way to get a shitload of memory space (like, 32GB for around $80-$90 versus a 32GB Pro Duo for around $200), but that they are slow as shit.

If they are not slow as shit, someone please let me know, because I've been looking for an excuse to pick up an adaptor and a couple of 16GB MicroSD cards.

So, uh... anyone know about Promethus? It seems to be some sort of super metroid clone where you play as a fox-girl and uh, explore a planet. It seems pretty low on polish from the demo that came up this week, but if the final product is a bit higher quality it could be good fun.

The demo plays like a flash game. A bad flash game, at that. Unless the full product is absolutely nothing like it, then it's going to be a pretty terrible thing. The concept is no worse than some other things that have some out, but there is just no reason for it to exist in the state it does.

Not to mention, the demo was pretty buggy, too. I jumped into the ceiling at one point and she just kind of stood there. In mid air. With her head in the rocky ceiling. Then when I hit down, she started ground crawling in mid-air and fell back to the floor.

I looked into the game a little bit more, and it appears they plan to release it rather soon. Unless the demo is pulled from an extremely early build of the game, I doubt that it'll get nearly the level of polish it requires to become a decent game.

I guess the studio that made it is also trying to use the game to push some sort of SDK they developed.

If you have a wife/girl(boy)friend/significant other not interested in gaming and you want them to get into it, GET PEGGLE. Seriously, my wife now has a PSN id and is interested in trophies, all because of that "Ode to Joy" stage clear moment.

Speaking of the trophies, some of them look damn hard. Every challenge stage? Knock out every peg on every level in the game? Wow.

    Nerdy Peggle story
I read over the trophy list when I started Adventure mode, and the "Get 20,000,000 in one play through" one stuck with me. I didn't do anything different while playing through, just kept a eye on my score as I progressed. When I started the last level with ~17.5M, I knew I'd have to do it again. I finished the level (second try) with a miracle bank shot off the cup into the last orange peg and landing in the 100K hole. Once all my scores were tallied, I got a 3.2M "Efficiency Bonus", tipping my total score to 20,019,000. My wife thought my jubilation was odd; now that she's played though, I can guarantee she'd react the same way.

Wow.

yea, my sister in law is a complete peggle fiend since i got it for her for her birthday like 6 months ago. shes cleared way more of the challenge levels than my brother has.

and yea, i'll never 100% peggle on the ps3. some of those trophies are like whoa. all the popcap games randomly have a couple ludicrous trophies in them, from what ive seen.

Might have to look into getting peggle for the wife then. She loves those sort of quick flash games since we've quit WoW.

Also, can I get in the PSN ID list on the next update?

Bolthorn, US, Have a mic but haven't used it in awhile.
I haven't used the PS3 much recently due to working a ton of overtime and Dragon Age on the PC. I miss gaming on the couch though.

That's a pretty nice sale, and I'm glad to see that Capcom continues to love us and only want $6 for nice things. Really, quite a nice bit of content this time around, especially for being an early week. Maybe that's why the Totally-Not-Double-Dragon game got squeezed out. (Or, y'know, maybe bugs or something.)

Sweet. I've been wanting Flower for a while. Now if only PAA:ep1&2 and Super Stardust HD would go on sale I'll be set. The only other one on that sale list that looks interesting is The Last Guy. Anyone know if it's any good?

Fuck yeah, Capcom. RE2 and then Dino Crisis, in a row, for $6 each?

    Awesome.

There's a Demo available for it. Or, at least there was, a while ago when it came out. I don't imagine it went anywhere. Personally, I didn't really enjoy it. It just seemed very underwhelming to me at the time. But if there's ever a time to try it for yourself in case you want to pull the trigger, a sale is a good time.

I didn't even realize Eye of Indra cost anything.

They really shouldn't use a photo of new Prince for the ad regarding a game featuring the prince from SoT in the style of the Mechner PoP games.

The first one didn't. I'm surprised this one was a dollar. I expected it to be higher, but I'm certainly not complaining.
