Every Fall publishers try to cram their best material into the first two weeks of November. Then there's a slump until December. This week is that slump.

NDS gets Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. Sounds cheesy, but looks pretty cool, as it's a first person RPG dungeon crawler of sorts.

The PSP gets Tekken 6. Should be a good portable iteration of the famous franchise, as Namco's other big fighting game ports have been excellent on PSP.

Wii gets Bit.Trip Void - the third in the series by Gaijin Games, famous for their "trippy" Bit Trip series of retro-style graphics and funky music-gameplay integration. This should be a good one.

Wii VC also should be getting Super Mario Kart (SNES); the classic mode-7 racer/battler that started the hit franchise.

The HD systems get some Borderlands DLC, they also get the arcade-styled Madden NFL Arcade, and finally the game Puzzlegeddon.

PC is getting Serious Sam HD - HD remake of the classic original with all new graphical assets and a somewhat revamped engine! Woo! The 360 should be getting it on XBLA as well - just not sure on the date with this one..

Slow week amidst an otherwise decent Fall lineup. Looks like there's a little something for each console (besides PS2) this week, you just gotta look to digital distro to find it!

When I read "Madden Arcade" in the title, I thought they were actually releasing a standalone machine for use in sports bars and like. That would be oen arcade unit that might rake in the dough in America, though I suppose there's an issue with the annual new game vs. player stat update deal there.

My profile's "threads started" list is like an index of games releases for the past year.

    Week 11/23/08 - 11/29/08

So, not too big of a week, amidst an otherwise huge Fall '08.

We have Chrono Trigger DS coming out, one of the greatest RPGs ever made, for NDS.
NDS also gets a new Age of Empires, which hopefully well be good like the last one. NDS also gets another port of an adventure/point/click game, Syberia, which, I think is/was good?

The Playstation systems get no retail releases this week.

The Wii gets the awesome must-have King of Fighters Orochi Collection, in other words KOF 94, 95, 96, 97, and 98 in one package. Definitely hittin' that up.

The HD systems get the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, after much ado.

So what's everyone getting this week? Probably nothing but Chrono Trigger DS?

It was another drop off. The week before in 2008 was Call of Duty World at War, Mirror's Edge, Banjo Kazooie N&B, Command & Conquier RA3, Wrath of the Lich King; and before that week was Gears 2, Resistance 2, Endwar, Valkyria Chronciles, and Korg dS

    Feather-jump high-five!

I have been waiting for SO LONG for this day to come since buying my Wii. Even though I've always had the SNES and cartridge ready to go at any time all these years, I still wanted this on my Wii, and soon it will finally happen!

    GET HYPE!

As unlikely as it is, I really hope that Nintendo puts the original commercial for Super Mario Kart on the Nintendo Channel.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQr3zBI6ai0
    (God, I love that commercial.)

There is one thing that worries me though, and it's the save states that is done with all Virtual Console games and how it may apply to Super Mario Kart. If you remember what happens at the end of a Match Race or Battle Mode, a counter increases by one to show how many times you have won or lost. The only way to reset these counters back to 0-0 is to turn off the game.....but that's speaking of the cartridge, naturally. (And no, hitting reset wouldn't work.) There's no such thing as "turning off" when using save states, so if we wanted those counters reset, we'd have to delete the save state in the Wii's memory (which we all know deletes the entire save file). Unless Nintendo has slightly tweaked how that works, we're all going to have 99-99 records pretty quickly.

    Oh well. :P
    GET HYPE!
(Is it obvious yet just how excited I am for this?)
    Dear Nintendo and Santa,

Thank you for Super Mario Kart. I hope the 800 Nintendo Points I'm about to give you will help you buy lots of cookies.

There's still just a few more games I'd like to have. "Jumpman" and "The Castles of Dr. Creep" for Commodore 64, "Super Street Fighter II Turbo" for Virtual Console Arcade, and a competent version of "Q-Bert". No biggie if you can't get that last one. I'm sure there are other games I could think of and would buy, but those are the ones I reeeeeealy want.

    Thanks again.

    Not quite..

Have you seen Tekken DR or Soul Calibur Broken Destiny on the PSP?

These are just like their console big brothers in terms of gameplay (tekken 5 and soul calibur IV respectively). All the characters and movesets and stuff are there (some modes are removed though).

The graphics are scaled back to run well on the PSP, but each of these Namco fighters on PSP still manages to look great.

But the important thing is these are pretty much just like the console versions and they run smoothly and they control perfectly.

So, no PSP can't run Tekken 6, or Soul Calibur IV, or Tekken DR or whatever. But it can run these games with the graphics scaled back far enough to make them run well on the system.

    Just about, actually.

The big fall releases are done for this year.

For the rest of the year after this week, the only thing I can think of are:

Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks, Tales of Monkey Island Ch 5, The Saboteur, Guitar Hero: Sammy Hagar Can Go Fuck Himself, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles The Crystal Bearers... That's all I got. Rogue Warrior?

I have no idea how many of those games are supposed to be good. I'm really looking forward to Crystal Bearers and I expect Spirit Tracks to be good. Silent Hill is a big maybe, the Saboteur is a big question mark too.

But yeah, this year's basically done besides those games.

Pandemic studios have been disbanded so whether The Saboteur drops this year is anyones guess. Watched a developer preview of it about a week before it happened and it looked pretty damn finished to me, so fingers crossed.

I hope Wipeout HD Fury gets a good showing in the end of year tally, the mine shooty races are so much fun and crazy difficult from the 10th lap onwards. Managing increasing speed with more obstacles with more frequent reloading times? Better not blink!

I don't know if it's approved for PSN yet, but I know it's going to be an XBLA game. It's a very fun and addictive puzzler in the same vein as Yoshi's Cookie.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZE72yhldiw

The multiplayer was pretty good as well, building up your resources by eliminating blocks then shooting rockets to damage your opponent or building shields to repel attacks and whatnot.

Yes, turning off the Wii kills the save state (but not actual saved games. That would really suck.) That eliminates your concern about not being able to reset those counters.

I think I might actually be done with big game purchases for the year now. It's sort of...odd to me. I don't really feel like the holiday release season is over yet, even though it is. It's more like the calm before the insanity of Q1. I'm actually kind of hoping some of those titles get spread out into the spring and summer.
