So how many people still play L4D1? Is it fruitless to try to get anything left out of it (I never played any of the new maps/modes)?

Right now you'll have minimal luck, if any, getting people. Once the New Game Fervor dies down a bit, I'm sure you can grab at least enough people to try out some of the L4D1 content you missed.

You think? I can't imagine ever installing L4D1 again. The second game is just better in every possible way. I do hope that someone ports the campaigns over though, I'd love to run people down with the charger in No Mercy.

I think valve said there would be support for l4d1 maps in l4d2. They'll probably patch it in later.

The Dead Air finale in L4D2 is pretty brutal

Is it actually possible for Infected to win now? Because last time I played L4D1, it was borderline impossible to win with Infected if the survivors were even remotely skilled.

I, uh, don't mean anything by this, but who on earth were you playing with as infected? Even if both teams were skilled, the infected had a decent enough chance of winning rounds in L4D1

In most of the levels, yes. But the design of Dead Air and the forced spawning during the finale makes it nearly impossible to get to the survivors before they hit you.

If they survivors move out by where that tape is, they can easily see any boomer/smoker before they are even close to in range, and hunters are easy to pick off as they fly towards you. The only danger is when a tank shows up.

I think I finally understand how Versus works, and it's an absolute blast. Uneven matches are still a huge pain in the neck, but when the levels of skill are moderately even then it's more fun than I thought was possible.

Once Left 4 Dead 2 gets 25% off and/or uncensored in Australia, I'll definitely pick it up. The thought of playing as a Charger makes me giddy with delight.

The charger is probably my second favorite Infected now. It's awesome how thin the line is between totally raping the other team and running into a wall and being killed immediately.

Spitter is by far my favorite though. I think I've done more damage with the spitter in L4D2 than I did with all the non-Tank infected put together in L4D1.

Import it from the UK from like blahdvd (57 AUD) or thehut.com. It will be uncensored.

For anyone else that has the censored version, send a mail to steam support. Good chance they'll switch yours to uncensored.

The Spitter certainly sounds extremely powerful. It seems to me that a canny player could seriously screw over even competent Survivors with one.

    Wait, what?

It depends a lot on how coordinated the other team is...if anything, the *MORE* people stick together, the easier it is for the spitter to do damage. It's especially lethal in combination with a lot of the other infected, since smokers, hunters and chargers all force people to sit in one spot, you can do a lot of damage with spit.

Also, scavenge mode makes for ample spitting opportunities, since you know at least one spot the players will always be heading towards.

I've heard of a few Germans simply sending a mail to steam and they changed their L4D1 version to uncensored.

You could make up a lil' story to go along with it but I don't think it's necessary. In any case if I were you I'd import it from the UK or have someone steam gift it.

I'll probably just wait for the Christmas sale and try to get a four pack going with someone in the US. Given I'll be playing on Australian servers I still won't see the Riot Cop Infected, but at least I'll have Left 4 Dead 1 levels of violence instead of magical vanishing zombies.

    ...

As a side note, can Infected manipulate the gnome in the Dark Carnival at all? It just seems to me that a truly evil ambush could be set up...

What do you mean, manipulate? Infected ignore the garden gnome, they won't run off with it if you drop it.

And in versus no one stops to do the minigames because you'll be killed. Not to mention the gnome achievement won't work in versus.

Yeah, I meant in Versus. Basically I thought that the Special Infected could attack the gnome so that it physically ends up near to where Survivors are going to go, tempting them to pick it up. If they do, then spring the ambush.

It'd be funny if nothing else.

The main trick as a Hunter is to realise that your jump has a curved trajectory. It's helped me land lots of pounces that would otherwise leave me at the feet of Survivors.

Well it can't work in VS since the gnome disappears between levels in that mode (the teams have to swap sides, and then health and stuff resets for the next level).

In any case the gnome can't be taken until the survivors win it in the carnival minigame (it's in a locked cabinet).

The infected can mess it up by knocking the gnome through a wire mesh fence right outside the stadium saferoom door...

Also, I don't recall who it was, but someone jumped over a charger in a recent versus game and it was awesome.

Well, not for the charger; he got shot.

I did something very close to it today, I think. I saw a Charger coming down a small lane, he was coming down the middle, I moved to the left, but there was very little space, and because I could think of no other thing to do, I jumped. He missed me. I really thought I was going to get hit. It got a few comments.

Now I was at very low latency (5-8), maybe it even set me up to host locally, that may have helped, but also rules out some latency issues.

If you were that low latency, then yes, you were hosting. And he probably missed badly. The netcode concerning the Charger's hit detection is as buggy as the Smoker's tongue was way back in the day. Smoker works great now, so it gives me hope that Valve will address the problem soon.

    Soon. Please Valve?

I'm on the verge of hating this game. I got the gnome all the way to the stadium safe house. Zombies were swarming us on all sides. We all rush inside right into the face of a mother fucking witch that was in the god damned safe house. She freaks and starts tearing us up, I hurl the gnome through the safe house door inside to safety and start unloading on her. Then as she starts her death animation I swivel in place and slam the door. Oh but here is the rage inducing part. As she stumbled forward dying she kicked the gnome right out the closing door.

    I really like scavenge.

Joined a random game last night, and entered the losing side of a game. My teammates were quiet and seperated, but when I suggested some strats they willingly followed me. In spite of my terrible decision-making, we ended up winning a few games, and worked quite nice as a team by the end.

The way this game can make a decent team out of 4 disorganized guys is quite amazing...

In other news, the charger is my favorite SI, but I pretty much suck at playing him. Sometimes the charger seemingly takes huge steps to avoid hitting the survivor in my path o_O

I guess I shouldn't charge from the sides until his hitbox is a tad less crazy

Edit: hunter-barrel-rolls are the best - happened to me twice as a hunter yesterday, and allowed a much faster recovery than a usual melee would.

As a European I can only talk to Brits, Nordic people, the Dutch and half of the Germans as those are the countries that speak English. When I'm playing with Italians, French or (worst case) Russians, fuhgeddaboudit.

Honesty, people give the director way too much credit for being some sort of thinking entity. What the AID does is:

    1. Choose from the two different locations at a given time to spawn hordes
    2. If the survivors stand still for too long, spawn another horde.
    3. In coop it also spawns special inf but coordination is pretty weak.

After the first month of L4D1 I just started thinking about it as a random number generator, because that's what it, basically.

Coordination in L4D2 is a lot more painful. I'm not sure why - it might just be ability related. That may or may not be director AI though.

Certainly Special Infected don't seem to attack one by one anymore. They save up and gangbang you.

I'm not that much of a coop player so I never noticed any difference between 1 and 2, I've basically only gone through the campaigns once or twice in both games so I'm not in a position to judge.

But spawning two or even three special infected at the same time is still in the random number generator zone to me. There's no real planning behind it, just syncing the spawns up.

This advertised smart and decision making AID which I've heard much talk about I've yet to see though. As it is now there's little difference between the AI in L4D compared to any other shooter out there.

The fact that it's at least that random is exactly what makes the game different. Sure, it may be a random number generator, but that still means that human brains will personify it as some hateful deity. It's like the dice gods. The horrible, horrible dice gods.
