The Daily Report With Jon Colbert + John Oliver Power Hour

Stealing the old OP
As this is basically a running diary of two shows that air four times a week barring holidays and other things, let's just start with the basics:

*The Daily Show is a fake-news program that does a lot better and has more informed viewers than the actual news. The host is very sad about this. Every so often he will wreck the shit of someone that deserves it. Most of the time they do not see it coming, and even when they do, he doesn't care.
*The Colbert Report is a fake-punditry show. The host, while being somewhat weaker at interviews, has just as much ability to wreck someone's shit, particularly lower-level politicians, which is why they have a tendency to steer clear of him nowadays. He is startlingly prone to Crowning Moments of Awesome. For example, this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYnzSvBeCqE

Annnnd you can just have those images in your head for a while.

As it stands, we're just coming off a weeklong break, coming back to shows interspersed with commercials for a guy that thinks he can bend the Internet to his will or something. To spite this man, his show will not be mentioned in this space.

The only change is that we're in a week long break.

Addendum:
John Oliver's new show starts tonight, Friday January 8th 2009. It is a repeating thing.

I could see them extending it if there weren't enough things going on over the holiday. They'll do something with that muppets video for sure.

They're back with Mazier Behari (Newsweek journalist imprisoned for four months in Iran), Tom Friedman (NYT columnist, aka The Mustache of Understanding, sarcastically), Lance Armstrong, and Michael Specter (author of "Denialism," which I do not know the topic of).

Jon had a gag where he visited the Writers' Room, where there were fifty of them hilariously stuffed inside a glass-walled cube. I haven't checked the credits but are there really fifty writers for the Daily Show? Colbert brought twenty or so out onstage when the Writers' Strike ended.

With the ratings and focus, they need and can afford as many writers as any scripted news program.

I'm sure they'll find things to talk about, even if they have to delve back a week or two. These recent breaks must've given them something to fall back on.

Unless it's the awesome Bohemian Rhapsody video, I'm clueless too. Not sure why it'd be on The Daily Show though.

For a second I thought I was in the Dancing With The Stars thread, because the Muppets showed up last night on the season finale.

... and admitting that I know this probably belongs in the Strange & Embarassing Moments thread.

But to be fair, my ex-girlfriend watched it, so I ended up catching a good bit of it as well. Saucy judges and astoundingly gorgeous women never got old. Probably helped that she was the one pointing out moments I should see for the latter.

Do we get Jim Gaffigan as a guest contributor now? Please tell me that wasn't a one shot deal because he was in town and he and Jon are friends.

Looks like he only serves the purpose of a joke related to the fame-whore couple.

Which ultimately means that the media needs to keep reporting on their escapades so we can have more Jim Gaffigan.

He could show up whenever reality-tv wannabes do something stupid. If only they had thought of that for the balloon boy fiasco...
