What's the problem with my sound?

On my (old) XP desktop, embedded video does not have sound, be it youtube or steam. I get in game sound, like TF2, but occasionally my mic sputters and gets a lot of static. I don't know what the problem is. it's not my mic, I have tried 4 different mics, and even purchased a new one.
Is it a driver, or is my computer dying?
