PC Sound Drivers... need to buy sound card?

I recently bought a used computer from someone on ebay. I recieved it formatted, with me having to finish the formatting procedure.

For some reason I am not able to install the sound drivers off the restore CD.

Does anyone think that the sound is broken and that I need to get a card or do I just need to find some drivers on the internet?

Is it detecting the onboard sound at all? you might need to enable the onboard audio in the bios before you can install the driver.

To clarify - you would most likely see some "Unknown device" listed in the device manager, with exclamation marks by them if windows would see it. Probably would also find it through control panel -> add new hardware.

If you have the motherboard manual you can go to the sound codec manufacturer's website for drivers, which should have the latest drivers or go to the motherboard manufacturer's site and they should be there.

Is the sound board on a card or on the motherboard? If it's on the motherboard, it's weird that the sound card wouldn't work. If it's on an external board, it's possible it was isntalled afterwards. Popping the computer and looking at the mother/sound board would tell you.
