Tomorrow I am rowing at Loughborough, 3k race. This will be my first serious race in rowing and just looking for any advice folks might have (not necesarily rowing based, just pre-match/whatever).

Planning on a large plate of pasta tonight, porridge in the morning, hopefully a good nights sleep.

So yeah. Looking forward to it :D

Don't eat too much. A lot of people have a misconception that you need to cram several plates of pasta down your throat, but you should only really be eating a normal-sized serving. Also, avoid any cream-based sauces.

Train for months on end beforehand.

Done that bit, though not as hard as I probably should have.

Can do 30 minutes, rating 20, at a 1:55.6 average split - if that gives any indication :p

british universities are freakin ridiculous at rowing
i'm looking at you oxford and cambridge

just finished up my 4th season of rowing.
my advice is to eat some pasta, get a good night's rest, and row hard!
don't get psyched out, hopefully you've been training hard :P

    also, 3k? what's up with that? no....2k?

    EDIT: rating 20?! whaaaat
maybe it's different in the States...
    that's not bad, 30 minutes at a 1:55. maybe a....7 or 8 kilometers?
you should be fiiiiiine. win some medals!

2ND EDIT: ooh! i like comparing 2k times, if you got any.
    140 lbs, 1:51.5 split, 7:26 overall.

Rating 20 cause the coach wants to focus on slow controlled powerful strokes. Was about 7750 meters. Would like to be able to hit 8k in 30mins

3k - no idea why. Probably due to the location vO

I've not actually done a 2k this year, last year I hit a 7:25, but I should be able to get under 7 minutes. Need to sit down and do one. Will put it on my to-do list.

OHHHH right, spm. I was thinking the rating on the erg, like, 1-10.
confused me for a second there :P

yeah, 20 spm is one of those kinda erg pieces... the ones that suck haha
(p.s. i hate the erg. worst thing to happen to mankind lol)

good luck with your race tomorrow!

IMO, 3K is short enough to not deplete your glycogen stores and some meta gaming with a lot of carbs pre race won't change your time too much. A balanced meal would do you just fine. I carb load for races that last longer than 45 minutes.

When I did my first Triathlon I ate a big portion of Pasta with meat sauce and sausage at about 6pm the night before. Went to bed early, woke up at 4:30am and ate my normal breakfast(whole wheat english muffin, 3 eggs and 2 strips of bacon). Then a Cliff Bar at 7:00. I had drank between 1.5-2 liters of water between 4:30 and 8am. My wave started at 8:36am.

I felt great the entire time. I had some Goo during the bike portion and about .75 liters of water during the race.

All that said, I don't know much about rowing other than the training I do on an ERG(5k is the furthest I've ever rowed at a 2:00/500m Pace, 21:22 was my final time). Whatever you do I think you will do great, just push hard. Good Luck man!

I run 5k races, different sport, but the day-before and same-day preparation should be similar.

    The Day(s) Before:

    - Drink lots of water.
    - Eat regular portions of food. Don't carb up on pasta.
    - Keep strenuous physical activity to a minimum. You need to rest up before race day.

    The Day Of:

    - Don't try anything new. Ex. As a runner, I shouldn't switch to a pair of shoes that I have never used before. I shouldn't try a new energy drink before I race. I shouldn't eat an energy bar that I've never eaten before.
    - Stay hydrated.
    - Make sure you go number two before the race. Physical activity will shake up your body and you absolutely don't want to feel like you have to go during the middle of the race. I know, it sounds really obvious, but I can't tell you how many stories there are of people going on themselves during a race because they didn't go before hand.
    - Have fun!

    All went to shit.

First 2000 or so were good, some nice length and decent pace. 3 Caught a crab, recovered pretty well, only lost a little time. About 200m from the end of the race stroke caught a massive crab, lost his oar behind him, and the boat crashed into the side.

    GASH.

Anyway, thanks for the advice :-)

It's because you didn't go #2 before the race.

Yeah, I'm picturing a crab hanging on to the oar...don't ruin my dream!

    Crab is a rowing term.
So, you extend the oars and pull the oar into your chest.
Now, imagine your oar getting stuck in the water, and the oar is now BEHIND your chest.
Why they call it crab? Dunno.

And ouch. Crashed into the side? Daaaaaamn.
    There's always next race!
