Leave it damp from the shower, spray in some detangler (nothing else, though), and do it up that way. It'll stay smooth and will part easier.
Quite a few of my Samoan and Hawaiian friends in highschool had hair like yours, I'd do up their hair all the time, not just for braids but for all kinds of styles.
what kind of detangler
i use tresemme mousse right after i get out of the shower, i foam it on my brush and brush it through my hair
i'm a whore for tresemme, so I also use the curl rejuvenator, or the frizz spray occassionally
I generally used whatever leave-in detangler was cheapest. Johnson's no-more tangles is pretty good, though on the light side. Tiny Tillia Cherry detangler is a little more heavy-duty, but you might have to order it online. Paul Mitchell's 'The Detangler' is very good for thicker hair, but it's more expensive. Kinky-Curly has some great detangling stuff, from what I've heard, but I've never used it myself.

People with curly hair (or the majority of stylists in the world) seem to only ever want smooth curls, though, so that photo shows 'bad curly'.
Hakks - Spoken like someone who has never had straight hair. It tangles at the least tiny bit of breeze, then builds and builds on itself. With curly/wavy hair, you have some natural tangling, but the structure keeps it from becoming a rats nest.
are you kidding, my hair is always a rat's nest. There is natural tangling, and then excessive, angry tangling that just gets worse and worse until your hair is literally a clump
