Hey, since I didn't go through with writing a nasty review when I unsubscribed to the PC gamer podcast on iTunes (a new years resolution), maybe this is a good place to say that their insanely pathetic pro-Activision stance made me kill the feed before I'd even gotten all the way through an episode.
I've been listening to a couple of newish podcasts:
Irrational Behavior- a sort of NPRish look behind the scenes of Irrational Games. The first episode has Ken Levine describing a zombie game they sold to Vivendi but never made
This Week in Computer Hardware- A more concise/dumbed down version of PC Perspective. Interesting if you are building or thinking about building a new system.

Why was it insanely pathetic? That IS standard procedure when people get fired from big companies.
GDC Podcast 2 is up from Giantbomb. Mega64 is there, so it's a crazy. If you're mad anal about off-topic, get the fuck as per usual.
I can't even parse that last sentence. But no, as much as I like GiantBomb and Mega64, they have no place in GDC. It's a developers conference, the one place where devs are supposed to be able to speak in peace without fear of PR backlash or having to waste their time selling their latest product, that's what E3 is for.
Eh, I dunno, from what they were saying on Giant Bomb, it's still largely a show for developers. Lots of middle-ware companies on the floor and talks about game development, not press conferences and booth babes.
Mega64 was invited to do a video for some award show (IGF, I think?) for the 5th year in a row, so I'm pretty sure they have a valid reason. Giant Bomb, well, it's a show about game development, and they're game journalists, and know a lot of game developers, so why wouldn't they go?
I should mention that I may have been warned about the hipster level on Area 5, but I was in no way prepared for it.
Goddamn.
See, now I'm curious. How do you even have hipster levels on a show about video games? Is it the way they dress? Do they talk about mopeds instead? What?

Half the episode I watched was composed of an interview with and performance by a solo acoustic guitarist that was somehow related to games.
And Matt Chandronait was wearing a checker pattern beanie. The whole episode. Of his own accord, one would assume.

Mega64 did some funny videos that they showed when they were gonna give out their GDC awards or whatever
Giant Bomb is there to cover it like they would any other gathering of game developers
GDC is very much a show for developers, lots of stuff about shit like SpeedTree and lectures on specific topics and how certain companies did certain things. I guess Naughty Dog had some cool stuff about how they designed the cinematics for Uncharted 2 and how they did the level design for stuff like the train sequence, and BioWare had some talks about cinematic design for role playing games and whatnot
Also Giant Bomb had two GDC podcasts and Idle Thumbs had none. Proof that the Bombcast is king

Agreed, this was summed up when the Giant Bomb guys asked that producer guest what he would be annoucing at GDC. The reply was, "well nothing, I'm here to learn how to be a better producer". The press being at GDC would not be a problem if the coverage reflected the fact that it is place for developers to hang out rather than a consumer show.
It is quite funny how Giant Bomb were ribbing at the large press coverage of the Consumer Electronics Show yet do the same when there is a shindig in their own back yard.

It's like if Spielberg were shown the door with hired goons 4 months after Jurassic Park came out. That is not standard operating procedure to treat your best people as if they're employees who stole from the register.
If you heard the episode, it was just disgusting. Sounded like a room full of people who were totally afraid of losing their press access and were bending over backwards to defend their lunch ticket. Yuck.

And then places like Gamasutra do an incredible, in depth analysis of a discussion panel on the development struggles of Uncharted 2.
Journalists have a place at GDC, by allowing the average man a chance to look in and see what all that hubhub and abloo abloo is about when all these developers get together and share ideas.

Gamasutra is part of the organization that is responsible for Game Developers Magazine, and used to be a key part of GDC, GDCE and the IGDA. It is anything but a representation of game journalism.
And I reject the notion that the general public is entitled to anything but whatever the panelist decides to release on his own blog/website. As soon as the GDc becomes an event for the public, it stops being one for the industry.

Thankfully, GDC doesn't remain as insular as you wish it to be.
I find that line of thought odd. Why should it be different from, say, the movie industry? I understand keeping some tech under wraps, sure. But video games are still an industry trying to find their way and anyway it can lead to better games getting made for cheaper, faster is ok with me. And letting the process be known to those of us on the outside looking in, well, that's just cool and interesting.
As for GDC podcasts, man, the Bombcast ones were fun. I love shenanigans and they always deliver. Also, unlike some game writer fellows, none of them really seem too interested in moving on to make games, which is cool. Speaking of, I can't say I'm gonna miss David Ellis, although I was never a hater of the man.
He seemed like the kind of fellow ready to drop out the second EGM went down. He was probably keeping an eye out for a good place to jump; 343 Studios isn't a bad landing.

I've never seen it get that bad, but I'll be sure to avoid that episode. I still like those guys, I just tend to skip through all the skits and stuff so I can watch them talk about videogames.
The "bouncer types" that Activision hired to stand around the IW offices and not answer questions, just look menacing.
You mean SECURITY STAFF? If you've never seen that, I can only assume you work at Taco Bell. Believe me, it is how people get fired from big office jobs.
If it's not the protocol that you're upset about, I assume you disagree with them being fired at all? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe we even know the details of precisely why they were fired; just a vague "insubordination".
I was just trying to build on what UVow asked. Also, the way it was phrased by IW employees made it seem like they weren't regular security guards that were there all the time.
So, I'm listening to the Bombcast on the recommendation of...pretty much everyone (their Game of the Year debate, specifically). You guys were absolutely right--this podcast is great.
And for those who are wary of Active Time Babble and Retronauts because of the mediocrity of 1Up's other podcasts, rest assured that they're quite good. Jeremy Parish does a great job hosting the shows, picking topics and wrangling together a cast that meshes well.
Retronauts was always 1up's flagship podcast for me. It was the thing that convinced me podcasts were awesome in the first place. I do wish they'd return to a weekly basis, though. I like ATB, but not as much.

As much as I'd enjoy hearing Retronauts every week, I don't think that would be good for the podcast. Given how narrowly focused it's topic is, I feel like putting it on a weekly schedule would make it feel less...content-rich, I guess, than it is right now. It seems like it's just more sustainable on a bi-weekly schedule. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.
Nah, Jeremy Parish probably wouldn't be up for it anyway. They used to be weekly, but it seems like there's a general lack of motivation. Understandable enough, considering the state of 1up these days.

Best recent snip from the Bombcast, I always find myself listening to this over and over, never really did get the whole phoenix down thing until listening to this.
This latest Bombcast (or whichever one I have on my phone) was hilarious - what with the guys from Mega64 and all of those developers in the same room. I also recently discovered Mega64 and laughed way harder than I should have at their Wii Fit, Bayonetta, and FFXII skits.
