    Nice OP.

The only semi decent ones are those coming out of the UK, Play and (to a much lesser extent) Edge.

Ha, why mince words? There is a back story about me looking for gift ideas/ideas for myself, but that is boring.

I'll put up a decent OP when people chime in with some suggestions.

How is PC Gamer these days?

A lot of people probably disagree, but if you buy a few used games a year, Game Informer really isn't that bad. They're the only ones who really manage to get exclusive previews, and the cover story writing isn't horrible. Just ignore their reviews completely

I read Game Informer. I know alot of people hate it but it's always got previews of upcoming games, reviews, calenders, and all that good stuff. Also, it covers all systems so I don't have to subscribe to 3 or 4 different magazines.
Sometimes they even have good articles about things that are relevant to my interests.

Also, alot of companies seem to enjoy giving exclusive announcement rights to GI so you can hear about new stuff in the future before anyone else (except other people reading GI, obviously).

If it wasn't so cheap, and didn't come with my EXTREME Edge Card from Gamestop, I probably wouldn't subscribe but for the price, it's great.

It is what it is, you know.

There's a new magazine coming out next year called Killscreen, it sounds very interesting.
Print isn’t dead. It’s just getting a makeover.

More than a few new gaming magazines have threatened to go to press in the coming year. Future’s forthcoming World of Warcraft magazine promises to deliver Azeroth-related scoops straight from Blizzard. Steve Harris, the original founder of EGM, says that a new magazine will rise from the old EGM’s ashes (though the promised date of 2009 is almost gone).

For my money, the pulp and ink gaming offering to watch is Killscreen. The project, spearheaded by writers Jamin Brophy-Warren and Chris Dahlen, aims to deliver literary-minded games writing in a handsome, glossy format. Something like Amusement — except in a language we all can understand.

The magazine will feature words spun by contributors to New Yorker, GQ, The Daily Show, Christian Science Monitor, LA Times, The Colbert Report, The Onion and Paste. Creative director Anthony Smyrski from Swindle will make sure the words and pictures look pretty. Have a look at a couple sample pages for a glimpse of what the magazine will look like.

And the content won’t be the same game old previews and reviews. Killscreen’s prose aims to answer larger questions like “”What does it mean to play games?” Heady stuff to be sure, but it looks like Killscreen has collected the heads to deliver it.

Killscreen’s budget was scraped together via Kickstarter, but there’s still a chance to subscribe. A single issue goes for $20. Might seem steep compared to a newsstand rag, but this magazine isn’t going to wind up on the spinner at your local grocery store.

There’s no announced release date for the first issue of Killscreen, but given that the magazine is more interested in considered think pieces than hot-off-the-presses news, the content ought to have a nice half-life.

Depends on how much content is in the magazine and how often it comes out. If something like PC Gamer was $20 every month, fuck that. But if it was a big magazine, with lots of content and a relatively small amount of advertising that came out quarterly, $20 wouldn't be bad at all.

I'm not being sarcastic, it is fair in reviews and actually gives decent previews to stuff you won't see on the web, obviously Nintendo consoles only.

I forget which of their own high profile games ended up doing poorly, but they really have no qualms about giving big stuff a 7 or less if it's deserving.

I'd be down with something like this. Something like a Playboy for games kinda deal, with a few spreads (of games, of course! :winky: ) and then articles that are gaming/internet related. Interviews with developers, that kind of deal.

It's just gotta be classy and well-written.

Edge is really excellent and by far the best gaming magazine I've ever read (outside of childhood, anyway). Lots of articles, not too many ads, and the reviews don't feature review scores.

Although I'm in the fortunate position of having a coworker who buys the magazines and then gives them to me when he's done with them. The only thing better than an awesome gaming magazine is a free awesome gaming magazine!
Even if they do misspell color.

Also, Nintendo Power is pretty good as of late. The retro sections are neat, and they had a nice interview with George Kamitani(Vanillaware, 2d artist extraordinaire) in the last issue.

Good. For a long time, Nintendo Power was terrible. Even last year it was awful. Maybe I'll check it out again now.

As for Play, yea, the design is nice, but honestly, Game Informer's new design is beautiful. The outside cover of the re-designed issues? A wrap around cover? This month's, with a close-up 8-bit Samus Aran shooting a red door, with a single metroid on the back cover? Gorgeous. The rest of the magazine reads really well, too... it's good stuff, and I really like the magazine content far better than Play.

First, I really fail to see how the fuck GamePro of all shit out there has managed to keep floating in the bowl. It has the worst layout, writing, and design I've seen in any magazine, and this thing has lasted over a bloody decade.

I did enjoy Play, no idea what edge is, but I can barely justify $20 for an art or photography magazine, or a snowboard mag like Frequency.

Play is headed up by Dave Halverson, who was the original head of GameFan, as well as GameRepublic.

HGM is headed up by Tom Lindquist, who was one of the original writers, and some of the other alums from GF. Amusingly enough, this thread on GameFan, where a bunch of said GameFan alums ended up all talking about the old days, is what spawned the magazine. It's a fun read.
