I suggest to open an email account just for this. You will be spammed to hell and back.
Limed for truth. Contests are essentially a means for companies to get in depth marketing research and/or contact information for the price of a few prizes.
Lately, whenever I see a commercial that says, "Go to our website for a chance to win X" I do...and enter. Most of them give you an option to opt-out of ever hearing from them again, and usually I just get a "Thanks for entering" confirmation e-mail.
When you start looking for those types of commercials, you'll notice dozens and dozens of them.
You might want to look for a website that lists all those "no purchase necessary" contests. You know all those contests stores run, but you can also enter by sending a 3x5 card?
Kind of related, a while back Microsoft was running a promotion to get people to do go to their "parents of gamers" website, so one day I decided to do all of the activities and ended up with a $150 Best Buy card. My wife ended up winning $250 from Coach for answering some survey she got in her email. So those random "fill out our survey" contests stores run aren't BS.
