RAMalicious

I bought a stick of Kingston RAM. It lasted me 29 days then caused a MCE fatal error on my computer. (If I remove the RAM the computer starts properly). I know the RAM is the correct type, and that my computer can use 1 gig sticks. Also I did not exceed the maximum RAM capacity of my computer, so I'm sure it's just defective. Does anyone know if Kingston RAM has a bad record of this, or is this likely an isolated case. If it is common for this brand to fail, what brand should I look for.

I think it's a common for all makers to ship bad memory. When we get new loads of machines at work, there's always a 6 month or so period where a lot of memory goes bad. Sometimes the circuits just don't settle like they should, and break after a few weeks of being used heavily.

We buy service contracts so it's all replaced at no charge, so I'm not sure where that leaves you. But I would imagine most memory makers have a 90 day warranty or something that you could use to get it replaced.

Check the packaging the RAM came in; Kingston is a name brand and will probably include a guarantee of some description in there. Also your retailer should be willing to take it back, even if this costs you an RMA or restocking fee.

Also, what xzzy said; all manufacturers will end up passing bad ram at some point; it's the nature of the manufacturing process for silicon chips. Soak testing simply can't be done for every chip or you'd never get more than 100K out the door in a year.

    Kingston's warranty page
Your 30 day old RAM should be covered pretty easily by Kingston's warranty. Here is claims information with kingston...(Claims), you'll have to pay for shipping, but they will not charge you any sort of RMA or restocking fee.. it's kingston's defective product, not yours

e: like the others said, Kingston makes good RAM, you don't have to worry about buying another brand... every once in a while they all have bad batches
