As part of a secret-santa between work colleagues I've been given a guy who I'd like to buy a PC game for. The only problem is I'm totally out of the PC gaming loop, but I do have some knowledge that will help me in my search.
The friend is a guy in his 40s and while he's mostly a casual PC gamer he loves the Total War series. I believe he has every single game and expansion in the series and plays them a whole lot in singleplayer. As far as I know he doesn't go into multiplayer and doesn't sound like he's after anything with more complexity than TW. He has mentioned other games in passing but I know this series is where he spends most of his gaming time. I have a cunning plan to check for any games he might already own, so I have that base covered. I know he had whatever the Warhammer game was that was somewhat TW-like.
So what I'm looking for is a PC game, nothing too full-on complex like Europa Universalis, but something a casual player who enjoyed the Total War games would like. Was there a WW2 game in a similar style to TW without the complexity of Hearts of Iron? I'm familiar with the old Close Combat games and something like that might be neat for him.
I know he got a really nice new PC lately, so sys requirements shouldn't be much of an issue. New, full-price games are fine as I can search around for a decent price to avoid going over our allowance.
Apologies if requests for game recommendations belong somewhere else. I checked the rules as best as I could and couldn't see anything saying so. Maybe if anyone else needs gaming gift help they can jump in on this too.

King Arthur looks pretty neat, but it apparently has heavy roleplay elements and is extremely difficult.
How about the Total War Eras Edition box set?

Even in used condition a fan would love that.
As many-handed as a cuttlefish.
Have you considered Company of Heroes? It's a different game, to be sure, but it's glorious and tactical.
Edit: Steam has COH Gold which contains the first expansion pack as well. There's been another since. Worth knowing if it looks like it might be up his street.
