I've got some AVIs. All my media players play them fine, EXCEPT Windows Media Center. It says the file can't be played. This is annoying, because I want to stream them to my Xbox 360.
GSpot says they're encoded using xvid.
When I tried to add them to Windows Media Player's library (so I could share them with my xbox), WMP crashed. Restarted the program and they appear in the library as normal, and play fine.
Explorer can't seem to make any thumbnails out of their icons.
What the fuck is going on here? DivFix++ said they're not even AVIs.
AVI is just a container format, and I've encoded many AVIs using the xvid codec. Not sure what these programs mean when they say it's "not an AVI." Anyway, I haven't had the problems you're having.
If you don't mind a slight degradation in quality, you might consider re-encoding the files. Even something like Windows Movie Maker might work for this. If quality degradation is unacceptable, then you might look into TVersity for your streaming needs and see if that works.
If you have VLC, does it give you any shit about the timeline needing to be repaired or whatever? Some broken files will do that, as well as being "un-seekable" with WMP.
Right. These busted files show their duration as 0 seconds in WMP. VLC bitches at me a bit when I play them in that, and are indeed unseekable. I guess I could reencode them but what a pain in the ass that is...
I should have remembered TVersity. I already have that installed and set up, I'll check if it works.

Sometimes you don't even need to reencode them. Remuxing them into a different container might work, and if the file isn't too mangled it is possible to use mencoder to rewrite the AVI by copying the existing video and audio streams.

I'd try seeing if you can load them in virtual dub http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ it's free and should be able to do what you need. Re encoding the video stream is how I've fixed unseekable files before.
