Customising Guitar Hero controllers

Like most of the sane people here (and a few of the insane ones) I both have and love Guitar Hero. It's the only "music game" I've ever enjoyed. I'm a bit gutted because when I move to Los Angeles in March I can't take my guitars with me. So I intend to buy another copy of each game, with guitars, when I'm in the city.

I also intend to give my guitar a natty custom paintjob.

Does anyone have any experience of cracking open the controller and painting it? What's the best way of going about it? Which is the best type of paint to use? Am I fucking insane for considering this, or is it a pretty snazzy idea?

There is a thread devoted to to this at the official GH forums (too lazy to link right now.) The recomendation there is to take the guitar apart, clean it with rubbing alcohol, and use painter's tape and Krylon spray paint. I've been thinking about doing this myself, but I think my fiance might not marry me if I ever did a custom paint job for a plastic video game guitar.

Drallo did it very successfully. I've opened my guitar before aswell to assess a broken whammy. It's simple and you shouldn't be worried about breaking anything if you're careful. Just watch the connecting wires that go to the start and select/whammy and buttons. An easy solder job if you fuck up but they're pretty weak.

Halibut: I'm browsing the GH forum now, so hopefully I'll find the thread.

DekuStick: Glad to know it's not Rocket Surgery in there. Do you know if there are any photos of Drallo's guitar?

Edit: Just found this website which may well help.. I'm browsing it now.

I think the name of the thread is "pimp my sg" or something like that. It's like 60 pages. But there are about 30 forums over there, so I don't remember which one it's in.

    My SG:

    Its fairly easy to do.

-Remove any stickers you have on it, use googone to get rid of residue

-Unscrew everything, for the love of god keep track of where the screws go, they aren't all the same size.

-Take everything out, try and keep the whammy mechanism together when you do this, its hard to put back together

-Lay down some newspaper in a place where there isn't much dust or particulates. Outside is not a good place for this

-Tape off a pattern if you plan on doing that

-Spray in 2-3 light and even coats with a spraypaint specifically intended for plastics

-Wait for it to dry, put everything back in and put in back together

    -Rock the fuck out!
