Help me Bass.

Actually, I need helping to reduce bass.

I've really enjoyed setting up a home entertainment system recently... A happy amateur. I'm pretty happy with the sound I have going through my setup - which includes a 200 watt sub.

An issue I am having though is when I use my mac mini, the bass seems to high.
I use VLC (awesome) and it has some graphic equaliser controls that I reckon could solve my issue.

I am however, a complete Nub.
Below is what I have access to.

I need some help.
How do I reduce the base using these controls?

Essentially, if you feel there's too much Bass, adjust the sliders to the left down. There's more to what it means, but if it is just that there's too much bass, just dial down the lower frequencies.

IIRC there’s a preset called “bass reducer”. You might also have to play with positioning of the sub—too close to the wrong wall can make all the bass sound similar and loud.

Is there too much bass in the entire mix, or just coming from your sub?

    Thanks for the input guys.

    Just to clarify:

    DVD's - OK.
    Music - OK.

    Mac Mini - Bass-ey.

So I dont want to just turn down the sub or anything because that will affect my other sources. Bass is in the entire mix. The sub just gives it that extra kick that can make it distracting.

Try turning down that pre-amp decibel boost.

Well, if the EQ isn't enabled then it likely isn't doing much.

But yeah, try enabling that EQ, setting the slider all the way to the left to zero, and experiment with lowering the 60hz and 170hz sliders down. Try sliding them down ALL the way and turning them up all the way to get a feel for how the slider will affect the sound. It's easiest to notice when you listen to the extremes. Then adjust as necessary to fit the sound you want.

yeah, sliders to the left are lower (bassy) frequencies, slide them down but keep them sort of curved, don't just drop one completely down and leave the rest. Looking at the defaults, the 'live' preset from the dropdown menu on the right seems like it might do it, pick different ones of those until you find one that sounds right.
