With the implementation of ladders and minecarts it could be a lot of fun to do what I tried to do before, and build a city into the side of a cliff with an exterior minecart transport system and balconies and then a few secrety passage going to the top of the cliff
maybe it's my old pessimistic bucking inside a me but I feel like an attempt at global peace would last exactly until someone got antsy and wanted to start raiding
but if there were teams there would be an acceptable outlet for that stuff!
anyway I don't know I just want to do it all
and I want to do it all with other people, no doing-stuff-on-my-own nonsense
If I raided a city I would take special effort to only partially destroy buildings. Like, take most of the material but leave like corners and walls so people know a building used to be there. Maybe replace some of the cobblestone with vines.
so apparently you have to manually save images after taking them with PRTSCR D;
oh well! heres the last one I took like five seconds ago
(the cobblestone is from me accidentally dumping a spring block while trying to get the lava source so I could relocate it)
(I died like ten seconds after this picture was taken)

speak of the devil!
I was just walking along the beach and look what I found:
gonna find some magma put it in a bucket and haul ass back to where the original was
I think the first thing new people need to learn is not to build your first base too far from your spawn because you will inevitably die and never find it again.

Or maybe I just suck.
I always try and get torches ASAP and leave a trail of them wherever I go. Sometimes instead of just placing one on the ground, I'll put down one cobblestone block with a torch on top to help identify it during the daytime. I also make sure I either put them on top of a hill or on a flat area, never on hill slopes (because it can kinda blend in during the day). This way I can follow my own trails any time. If I can't make torches then I'll build cobblestone pillars at least two blocks high (sometimes three) and I don't try and move at night so I don't miss a pillar and get turned around.

So I finally broke down last night and bought the game, and I'm wondering about torches. I heard that they keep away monsters, but how true is this?
Does anyone know:
1) What effect being near a torch has on a monster?
2) What effective distance they keep monsters at bay?
Because I was following the example of other people in making a path with cobblestone pillars with torches on them, and I watched one at night, and this creeper walked right up to it, and did not seem to mind the thing at all.

torches have no effect on monsters whatsoever
they will, however, effectively prevent monsters from spawning, as monsters need a minimum level of darkness to spawn
the torches are good for keeping your castle/treehouse/mines/whatever lit properly so that creepers do not spawn inside them while you are not looking

"major factions" probably meaning 5 people to a team here unless this shit gets super popular, but nonetheless
We should just compete to see who can build the best city.

picking a spot to dig
dig up right into the middle of the city
take over
I guess so long as you didn't destroy buildings it would be okay. Items would be fine.
but I might be up for some mischief
Fill all their chests with meat.

So I guess you can make lava room traps now with doors and a pressure plate?
Or maybe I just suck.

Ok, so how big is this anti spawning radius for a torch? And by "minimum level" do you mean it has to be pitch black for them to spawn?
It's huge! I'm happy.
