Sweat Socks for Boots?

I'm doing some Christmas shopping for my dad and I remember him mentioning at some point earlier in the year that he would love to find "extra-tall, extra cushy sweat socks to go with my boots" but I'm pretty sure he's been unsuccessful to that end. I tried doing some research and have also come up empty handed.

On random searches I've found "Cabela's Wool Boot Socks", Thorlo boot socks, and heard mention of cotton and bamboo being particularly good for absorbing sweat away from leather boots. But before I buy anything I thought I would check here and see if anybody has some recommendations for socks to go with boots.

Here's the socks I was looking from Cabela's if anyone wants to check to see if they're worth it: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp;jsessionid=RVWGI1TSVAWHDLAQBBICCOFMCAEFCIWE?id=0020403812018a&type=product&cmCat=froogle&cm_ven=data_feed&cm_cat=froogle&cm_pla=0640103&cm_ite=0020403812018a&_requestid=238453

Thank you for any help, I appreciate it.

Wool is what I prefer for any period of time I have spend outside, or outside/inside. It keeps your feet warm, but allows them to breathe, and doesn't get too warm when worn inside.

Current temp here is -25 Celcius, I spent about four hours working outside this afternoon (Fire Dept Vehicle Ex Drill) and my feet were plenty comfortable, warm and dry.

Cotton is awful for for socks if you're outside in the wintertime. Cotton doesn't stay warm when it's wet so your feet get hot, they sweat, the socks stop keeping his feet warm, and next thing he knows his toes are numb.

Wool is definitely the way to go. Something like this is perfect: http://www.rei.com/product/712784

Or you can get ragg wool socks like these: http://www.rei.com/product/242163
Just make sure you get actual wool and not something that looks like these but isn't wool.

    Those Cabela's socks are fine.

Yeah, was gunna say, don't you basically just want hiking socks?

Or skiing/snowboarding socks. Or whatever. They are all designed to be worn inside boots, be comfortable during prolong use, keep your feet warm in bad conditions and cope with getting wet/sweaty.

Ooh, good insight so far, this will definitely help when I go to Sears or JCPenney's later. There's not a Cabela's near me unfortunately, I might end up ordering them but I'll see what I can find around town first.

I love Cabela's. My step-dad does a lot of work outside and I always get him socks from there for that and to wear with his hunting boots. In fact, I may have bought him the ones you link here. They're worth ordering.

I second the REI socks. All I use when I go hiking and backpacking and I've never had any problems.

Wool, as others have said, is the way to go.

These are what I wear with my Mukluks.

cotton is bad for socks besides the whole losing warmth but i won't get into it. I actually just picked up a pair of smartwool's work line. they are marketed for wear with work boots and they are super nice. pretty warm without being overly bulky. mine are crew but i think they have OTC version if thats what you want.
