Hey! Um. My connection has kind of gone batshit insane? when it's just on standard settings to auto-grab IP etc. it works just fine. I've had this specific static IP for over a year and it's been totally fine, too. i upgraded to win7 but it was fine for a while there, so if this is a reaction to win7 somehow it was delayed. Recently though the connection has gone batty and likes to sever itself semi-randomly. sometimes just for fun, but mostly in reaction to specific things. like.. going to gamespy will
always drop my connection. as will going to livejournal. it happens like clockwork so it can't be complete coincidence.
when the connection drops i just open the network folder, disable it, and enable it again and it works just fine until the next drop. it'll also do it with torrents but that's less identifiable.
i had it suggested to me this might be due to lots of images, or DL/UL speed. lots of images work fine on pages my connection seems to be on speaking terms with. likewise, i've had a torrent never disconnect me even when DL/ULing as much as i can, and other times it'll always drop me even before the speeds reach 20kbps. so i'm guessing it's more reacting to certain connections there than speeds? i don't know ;_;
things i've been told to try are changing my IP which actually did seem to ease things up but not fix them completely or maybe i'm imagining things. also been told to try Open DNS instead of the DNS the cmd prompt thing gave me, which did nothing.
um. running Windows 7, the network thingajig is an nForce 590 (i think it's 590), and, um. i have a linksys router? i've updated the drivers on the nForce thingy too.i don't know what other details to put up here. i'm kind of sort of tech retarded, so please be patient with my stupidity ;_; are there any other details i should have up here?
thank you, in advance!

Try starting a constant ping to www.google.com in a command prompt window (ping www.google.com -t) and see what happens when you launch gamespy, do the pings stop? Do you get a pop up saying that your cable has become disconnected?
Have you tried updating your NIC drivers? Are you connected through a router or directly to a modem of some kind?
DNS wouldn't affect this.
but that aside! when the connection drops, the ping gets "timed out." also there's no popup, but the little network icon in the taskbar gets a yellow exclamation point. not a red x. when i click it the error symbol shows it between the pc and the network, not my network on the internet.
yep! mentioned drivers being updated. aaaand doesn't look like there's been any new ones since my first post. yes on the router too, which is a linksys WRT54GS
