So I just got a text message from Gamestop saying that I had unused pre-order credit. I go to their website gamestop.com/credit and lo and behold they had $145 over the past 8 years and now I get a gift card. Now I haven't bought a game from Gamestop in forever, but I always assumed that money (if I lost my pre-order slip and/or I never went to actually get the game) was eventually lost.
I guess I have to go buy a game or something now. Anyone else get a text?
Hey Slash, that video says that if you show them the receipt they'll give you back the $10 for the pre-order. I think you should take them up on that offer by taking a brand new, Screwattack exclusive picture of the current status of the receipt. Make sure to account for inflation and ask for more cash.
Oh, and as for the thread I'm sad to say that I didn't get a message. However a year ago they randomly found $35 in credit which I promptly used. I wish they had found an extra $100 though. I don't know where the $35 came from either, as I never pre-ordered the games they said I did.

I think the more important question is, how the hell did Gamestop get your cell phone numbers?

I used to pre-order games I know will be in short supply. But now that I live in a house, everything gets shipped or picked up at Fry's.

I got a text today about that. apparently I had 35 dollars laying around in their systems for whatever reason. I haven't used a gamestop in 2 years since I moved from having one local to using the gamecrazy right down the road from me.

Huh... $25 here. Though I think that's from $5 down for a preorder here and there...
Wonder if I can get that in cash....
I worked at GS and your preorder info was always in the computer. Our managers were happier if we forgot to mention that to the customers though because it looked bad when someone cancels a reserve.
When you preorder a game at Gamestop, and don't pick it up, your money doesn't go anywhere.
Even if you have five dollars on a game that gets cancelled, you will have it in the system under your name for "[CANCELLED SKU]" and can always go and get it. So people that preorder endless shit and never go to get it have a game's worth of money floating around in the system to use as they please.
That whole internet conspiracy of "They just take our five dollars!" from a while back was total bullshit.
Well, they still have a separate site for EB Games, and if it worked for both then I would more than $10 in credit. I can think of several games I preordered and never picked up from the store, one of which was ODST, and I put $10 down for that alone.

They took mine. I went back to the store several times to get my money from the preorder, and was always told that they'd call me back after checking their physical records. Never did get called back. GS is deplorable in every way.
Hm, I didn't get a message... then again I've never not picked up a pre-order.
Odd that they're just doing this now... I'm guessing there was something (threat of a suit, management change, etc.) that made them want to clear their books of unused credit, and quick.

Right near the end of the year, too.
Wonder if it is tax related. Still, $5 is $5. I'll take it back and reserve something else I won't pick up.
Edit: I just realized that the stores probably hate this. I am betting as soon as the gift card is printed the pre-orders are automatically removed from the system, which may hit the store as a cancelation. Ouch.
I've never understood putting anything more than a small deposit down on a preorder. Do you know where my money is best kept? In my fucking pocket.
I always pay in full at GS, want to know why?
Because I never pay cash, it's always trade ins I bought used at blockbuster or from a Wal-Mart bargain bin!
In fact I do probably 90% of my purchasing at Gamestop in batches of two or three times a year.

Yeah, that money you put on pre-orders doesn't do anything for GameStop if it's not used. So alllll that money from games no one ever picked up is just sitting there, useless to the customer and GS.
This gets people to actually use that money. It's win for both parties.

I don't understand this thread either.
I mean, who fully pays off a game at one store, and then just says "fuck it" and buys the game again at another store, just forgetting about the $60 they just wasted? Hell, I'd be upset doing this over a $10 preorder. I've got bills to pay, damn it.

I apparently had $5 in credit. Haven't used GS in forever.

that being said, the $145 figure seems like it must be an error, unless you pre-ordered steel battalion or something
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
I didn't have any credit on my account when I went in the other day and reserved Dark Siders. Says I have 35$.
Wonder what's up with this.
Maybe old pre-orderes? It's weird tho because I've definitely changed my number since last time I was there.
But fuck, $145 in games you just forgot to pick up? I'm impressed.
That would be incredible, history in the making. But I doubt it.
Gamestop's screwed me again.
Anyone care to elaborate on this story I haven't heard, but was allegedly (about to watch it) referenced on ScrewAttack?

Last name + number used for pre-orders
Considering they are the same company now, it probably works for both.

There could be something to that, actually. Wonder if some new state laws required them to do that, and it was just easier to flush it out nationwide?
Ah well. Good thing for gamers, but the logistics of this must have been a nightmare.
I remember that day. I hand keyed several hundred paper slip pre-orders into the system.
It sucked.
