Need help repairing my PS2

The help I'm looking for here isn't strictly prohibited but it is kind of a gray area, so I understand if it gets shut down. On to the point.

I have a modded slim PS2 whose laser is dying. Right now it only reads legit PS1 games. It will not read back-up copies of PS1 games I've had to make (FF7 for instance) or any PS2 games at all. It also does not play DVDs anymore. The guy who modded the PS2 initially offers laser replacements as well, but he seems to be out of business for the moment. Does anyone know of a reputable place in the US that can repair my PS2 or does anyone have any suggestions on getting my PS2 working again without replacing the laser?

Couldn't you just buy a used PS2 slim from Gamestop or off craigslist, pop both of them open and swap the lasers? It can't be too hard to do.

I looked into that kind of. There's a store near me that replaces lasers. Apparently since my PS2 is modded it uses a different laser than a normal PS2 so I couldn't just swap it with a regular one.

I don't know much about hardware modding, but that doesn't make sense. The issue would be region locking, which I didn't think was locked to the laser itself. The laser in any PS2 should be able to read the data from any CD/DVD, it just won't because it detects it's either a copy, or from a different region.

You could be right. I don't know much about the technology either. I'm not sure if the fact that the copied games are on CD-Rs or DVD-Rs would stop a normal PS2 laser from reading them assuming they pass the copy or region check. Anyone got any ideas?

OK I looked into it a little more. I've got a v.12 slim PS2 and the model number is SCPH-70012. I found this site here that sells replacement lases lenses. It looks like they are supposed to work perfectly with modded PS2 slims. I also found this clip on youtube to show me how to replace the lens, and it doesn't look that difficult. Once I take the case off I just have to unscrew to things and swap out the lens. Anything I'm missing or should watch out for here?
