I just recieved a Droid for the holiday.

What do I do now? This thing scares the hell out of me, I've never had a phone that did more than make phone calls. I have my calendar synced, and my email is up and running. Are there any "must have" or even "cool" apps or features that aren't immediately noticeable?

Thanks!

I'm on the internet constantly on mine since work blocks most websites. The gps is great. The apps I use often are:

    Aldiko ebook reader
    Astro file manager
    Movies by flixter
    Places directory
    Google goggles
    Shazam
    Last.fm
    Zedge

Also Pandora, and Grooveshark whenever that's out of beta. I don't know why Grooveshark doesn't get more buzz in general. It's essentially every song in the world, in one place, that you can listen to whenever you want, and make radio stations out of. You don't have to own a single song, to be able to listen to any song you can think of. But I digress.

Social networking is a big thing to do on these phones, but I'm not much of a social networker myself. I have Twidroid to follow tweets, from things like Penny Arcade. Google Sky Map is an awesome toy, if not useful. SNESoid is nice to be able to play super nintendo anywhere, but the controls are kind of assy. Should get a task manager, to kill those pesky battery-hogging apps when you're done with them. I like Advanced Task Manager. Google Voice is also nice for transcribing your voicemails, and for free texts, but you have to wait in line for the beta.

    Awesome!

I fooled around and grabbed a bunch of apps. The eBook reader is awesome. Huffington Post is awesome. I can't seem to get Google Goggles to work, even with barcodes (my father worked on that tech a few years ago, so color me curious).

Next question: My device is all naked and lonely. Any suggestions for cases/accessories? The last thing I need is my clumsy hands cracking the screen (dropped it once in the snow yesterday, no damage!). Oh, and I want bluetooth as I can get that hooked up to my office phone, too.

Are there any worthwhile emulators? I'd love to be able to pull out some classics while stuck at the airport.

Verizon has plastic covers and screen protectors, both of which I have and they work fine.

If you end up getting some type of holster with it for some reason, make sure it doesn't have any magnets on it as that is what triggers the "dock mode" and it will stay on constantly in the holder, thus draining your battery.

The DroidLight App turns your LED flash for your camera into a flashlight.

For your safety I do not recommend continuing this discussion at this particular internet location.

Do you have Netflix? PhoneFlicks is an awesome app where you can manage most everything you need on your accoount/queue right from your phone.

Google Skymap is a fantastic thing to bust out on outside dates.

I assumed that since the programs were "official" through the app store it was kosher, I didn't even think of that, so end conversation.

I'll check out PhoneFlix, as Netflix is ingrained in my lifeblood.

Thank you for this, you have changed my entire working day. Now I can sit at work reading books all day (sitting with an actual book out would raise too much suspicion).

Isn't it great? If anyone comes over you can always swap over... "I was checking my mail!"
