Check out their Secret of the Runes album; every track deals with a different world in norse mythology and is likened after it. So the beat for Schwarzalbenheim sounds slightly like the beating of hammers in a forge while Muspelheim sounds like a fire that suddenly flares and then burns down. Excellent for D&D.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
I've got to put in my usual plug for Jag Panzer here. Several of their albums have Chris Broderick on guitar (lead guitar on Megadeth's newest album) and he's and absolutely amazing musician.
I have noticed that no one else ever mentions them in any metal thread. Does everyone hate them or are they just not well known?
They have an album based on The Hobbit and that's all you need to know.
The Silmarillion, not the Hobbit.
If you want suggestions for good power metal then Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards, Gamma Ray, Kamelot, Stormwarrior, early Sonata Arctica, Persuader, Dark Empire, Savage Circus, Angra, Firewind (last two albums), Manticora and Powerwolf.
As for other bands...try Satania by Mago de Oz. Ignore the shitty anime, couldn't find any other decent video that had the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9Qg7rq31Dg
Not sure if anyone has mentioned Apocalyptica, but they've got some pretty epic songs though most of their tunes are a little more harmonic than metal. Music starts at 1:18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyqLl0XoMTI
I believe someone mentioned Blind Guardian as well, check that out.

Hmmm...less metal, more symphonic, but still fitting the mold of epic D&D-conducive artists is Nightwish:

I'm disappointed that no one has mentioned Helloween yet, considering they're one of the earliest power metal bands. Primal Fear is another great band that hasn't been mentioned yet. Also, while they aren't strictly power metal, some New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Bands, particularly Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, were notable influences on power metal and should be along the lines of what you're looking for.

Given that they tend to sing about WW2 and other more modern conflicts, it's not really D&D fodder, but Sabaton is pretty damn good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZm4zseMok0
Moonsorrow - I'm not even going to bother linking a youtube because almost all of their best songs are too long for it, their latest album is two ~30 minute songs. They are pretty much the apex of epicness.

I'm not so much into the death growling though.
I dig Rhapsody of Fire a lot.
Also, the proper term you're looking for it "power metal". Go onto Last.FM and see what comes up. Most of it sounds the same, anyway.
Thanks! I knew it was either epic metal or power metal.

This one is very much Death/Black metal so you might not like it but hey, it is a fantastic song:

Oh yeah, I went there.
"Judge if you want.
We're all going to die.
I intend to deserve it.
My last words will be "Yeah, I had that coming.""
The Silmarillion, not the Hobbit.

If we're getting to melodic death, there are a lot more open doors.

Dammit you're right. Thanks for the correction.
Edit: Check out Falconer too.
Helloween (godfather of power metal)
Here's a German Folkmetal band, you may not like the vocals but you can't argue with the epicness

OH LOOK ANIMES (the song = "Spirit Never Die")
Damn good video. Sums up the whole "WOO FUCK YEAH LET'S DO STUFF" vibe quite nicely.
you're saying that as if you think time is ever coming out, heehee
anyway if the OP is gonna be a little girl about death vocals then that severely limits my recommendations, but I'm gonna go with:
Equilibrium (they got mentioned before but these songs are better :P )

Rebellion (Viking themed power metal)
