Xbox 360 red ring - Out of warranty

My 360 red ringed for the fourth time (!) since I bought it back in 2006 and I've realised it is out of warranty. What are my options when it comes to getting a working 360 again? I live in Australia by the way.

Here in the US they charge $100 to fix a RROD system that's out of warranty. It comes back with a 1 year warranty at that point. Not sure if it's the same in Australia but it's cheaper than buying a new one.

It's cheaper than buying a new one, but might be a refurb that's ready to die again, just past your year warranty. It might be best to pick up an arcade at the after christmas sale for $100-200. The newer machines have lower failure rates anyway.

The woman on the phone told me it would cost $180 if I completed the repair order over the phone but apparently it's a lot cheaper (try $150 cheaper) if I did it online.

Now I can't find a way to let me pay for my console repair for the life of me... I've registered my console on xbox.com and it won't let me register a new repair, it's just all greyed out:

I believe that's telling me you're still under warranty for the RROD, just not the standard warranty. They have a much more generous warranty for the specific heat-related RROD, because otherwise they would've been lynched.

That's how I read it too... But when I called up they said my warranty was expired and I'd have to pay, even though I explicitly stated that it was a RROD and they acknowledged that fact.

I'm going to try calling again.

im assuming you have a refurb unit as youve rrod'd before, your warranty is most likely expired as those refurbed units only have a standard warranty and NO 3yr/rrod warranty.

They gave me a one or two year extension onto my existing RROD warranty when mine busted.

if you're handy at all, it's incredibly easy to fix a RROD xbox most of the time... you basically have to open the case (this is by far the hardest part), and replace the existing heatsink mount (the infamous X-clamp) with bolts/washers... then you heat up your xbox to re-seat the GPU, and voila! fixed xbox

it literally costs $5 in parts and maybe an hour of your time total... really worth trying before spending $200 on a replacement if your xbox is out of warranty

The easy way is to go out and buy an arcade.

    That's what I did.

It's preposterous to suggest an additional $200 purchase for the shortcomings of a product.

Call them, bug the fuck out of them get it fixed for free.

I called it "easy" for a reason.
