Yeah, I know, it's kinda old, but it's new to me.
Oldboy. Just finished watching the movie and the only thing is
For the uninitiated (go watch the movie
),
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldboy [spoilers]
So, crazy movie. The ending kinda got me all, wtf?
Spoilers within
[spoiler:09f7015f49]Crazy messed up incestuous stuff going on in the plot anyway
Daesu sleeps with his daughter, kills a whole bunch of people and at the end of the movie, ends up with the hypnotist. Same hypnotist from way in the beginning, taking him out of the room onto the roof. So, is he cured? He's way out in the middle of nowhere, I assume, with all the snow, yet Mido is still there. >.>
And shit, Daesu had the chance to kill him after Woojin told the guy not to open the box. He kinda just sits there. Aaaand Woojin ends up killing himself. His purpose in life was to torture Daesu?
Why did Daesu hypnotize himself? To get rid of the bad memories. But, the girl's still there. Uhhh...?
So many parts of the movie confuse me. Mainly, the crazy plot with the hypnotizing. I know he was locked up for inadvertently killing Woojin's sister, by spreading the whole rumor thing of incest. Why didn't Woojin just kill himself (UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN!!)

Best part of the movie?
Definitely the hallway fight scene. Damn, that was probably the best movie fights I've seen
I'd say 4 out of 5, for the crazy plot line and story telling.

Man, that guy killed nearly an entire building of people.
I'm pretty sure that Woojin wanted him to live in pain though, with the whole "Don't ask me why I let you out, ask me why I didn't keep you in" and then shooting his assistant.[/spoiler:e4a3f4f7bf]

Have you seen it yet, Esh?
And if you have, similar to Oldboy in same vein of revenge, better, worse, small overview of trilogy, something anything?
Oldboy is about revenge. I figure the other two are about revenge as well. Are the three movies related at all, besides the main theme of revenge?

I own all three and they're great. And yes, they have similar themes but way different plots. related otherwise? Not that I noticed.
So, yeah, Oldboy.
Great movie or greatest movie?
:P

It does have one of the greatest fight scenes ever.

Also, the hammer to teeth. Ow. Speechless.
I don't care that it was a movie. That was painful. I flinched >.>[/spoiler:dc8cb93407]

I don't recall too much about the movie as it has been a long time since I have seen it, and the discussion in this thread have only confused me more, so I am going to have to go and watch it again soon.

Liked the movie until it got near the end when all the mysteries get answered, then it kind of fell apart in ridiculousness.
But yeah, the whole revenge plot is amazing.
Man, I dunno how that was predictable. I was
I'm going to watch the movie tonight, though I read the manga that came with it, and really liked it.
I didn't even know there was a special edition. I have heard there was a boxed set with all 3 movies in it...but would I be privvy to such extras as the SE with the boxed set?
I must research!
More to add tomorrow.
The Oldboy SE is a tin box with three discs (one with bonuses, and the other a "shooting diary" of sorts, just video from each day of shooting, which is really rad), the first manga volume, and a bit of film reel. It's one of my favorite purchases in a while.
And everyone here should see Lady Vengence when they get a chance, it's just as good.
This is the best part of the film. That visceral shock when it ends lets you know that, plot-related nigglings aside, Oldboy is a fucking amazing piece of artwork. As a kid, even average movies would provoke a certain high after leaving the theater. Oldboy replicated that feeling.
Brilliant editing, fight choreography, and performance from the protagonist.
Yeah, that's the impression I got, too. I think he just wanted to not have to tell her what was up, and that was the only way he could really do that.
I watched 3 Extremes last week. Park's short is actually pretty lame, considering, but the first one, "Dumplings" will probably scar me for life. Yay.
Anyone want to beta read a paranormal mystery novella? Here's your chance.
stream
OUCH.
:x
Watched it, and seriously -- if it wasn't for the photography, I would have turned it off like 7 minutes in. I'm NOT fucking around. The story was PATHETIC.
I'd love to hear what your idea of fine cinema is. Let me guess...you Fight Club or something.
Did you see Salesman? Maybe you've seen General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait? Hopefully you've seen Gates of Heaven? Startup.com? The Perfect Candidate? Or perhaps Comedian? Obviously we've all seen The Fog of War, which was simply genius. Those are just the ones I really love though, if you want to talk more about other documentaries, we can definitely do that.
I've seen about half of those. More of a French, Noir, or classic Japanese cinema kind of guy. I am going to check out the Reel Music Film Fest while it's going on though. I doubt "we've all" seen Fog Of War since it was only in theaters for a very brief run, but I did enjoy it quite a bit.
P.S. Can't stand Chuck. The only thing I've liked of his was "Fugitives and Refugees: A Walk in Portland, Oregon".
yep. Though I'm a huge Errol Morris fan and I'd be interested in a documentary thread.
Anyway, did anyone find the scene with
[spoiler:915dae039c]the tongue-cutting[/spoiler:915dae039c]
to be kind of inexplicable? Didn't seem to fit with the character.
...
maybe because it SUCKED?
Seriously, it was okay to look at, but I mean as far as movies go it was pure ass, such pure, undistilled, painful, horrible ass that I actively wanted to turn it off, but couldn't because the photography was too good. So yeah, fuck you -- that's my take, and that's how I feel about it*.
*redundant.
You're not actually making any points here. Repeatedly saying "DUDE! IT SUCKED!!! I LOVE FIGHT CLUB!!!" makes me think you should be hanging out at McFaddens and spiking girl's drinks. Come up with something better.
[spoiler:a665497637]The story about a man who was fucking his sister in high school and somehow felt so wronged by it that he decided to enact a multi-year, long, drawn out revenge scheme which involved a 15-year, super-mega-secret kidnapping of an otherwise completely random private citizen, as well as YEARS of hypnosis treatment, as well as planning it all out YEARS in advance so that he could spring the trap once the baby actually arrived, is one of the most implausible, retarded, idiotic, and stupid storylines I've seen in my entire life. Did you read that shit I just wrote? Fucking read it again. That is RE. TAW. DID. That is one of the dumbest stories in the history of like common sense. Add on TOP of that that they reveal it to us like we're some idiotic 7 year olds who are amused by these comically pathetic plot twists only makes it worse, then on top of THAT, they expect us to ACTUALLY SUFFER through all that bullshit melodrama where he's SO UPSET that he fucked his daughter, said fucking being one of the most pathetic pretenses ever committed to storytelling (I mean pulp mystery writers who do 130% of their sales at airports are fucking CRINGING here), and it all adds up to one of the stupidest movies ever created in the history of cinema.
Oh -- but yeah, it was something to look at. That is the ONLY redeeming quality of this piece of shit film.[/spoiler:a665497637]
Maybe you should re-read or watch Fight Club and tell me that is not one of the most ludicrous and far fetched stories you've ever read/watched. Pot? Kettle. Love of God...
How many sisters fucked brothers in Fight Club? How many fathers fucked daughters? How many ~20 year revenge plans were enacted by one vindictive individual who somehow inexplicably was afforded every single privilege of society after throwing the same sister he had been fucking and got pregnant off a fucking dam?
Oh, and what of that "if I spend 15 years in solitary captivity and shadow box I can become the most deadly killing instrument on the face of the earth" bullshit?
Let's be fucking real here, that movie SUCKED SO MUCH FUCKING ASS.
I mean, do you REALIZE that I haven't even GOTTEN to the weird hypnotist bullshit and the retarded end scene where he's somehow mute and trying to forget his past because he just wants to fuck HIS DAUGHTER again?
I mean seriously, fuck you you small minded fool -- what the fuck EVER made you think this pathetic excuse for a photography exhibit was EVER comparable to Fight Club? That's some Grade A bullshit I'd really like to hear.
Right, right. You're so right. Nevermind all the awards it won and how critically lauded it was. What was I thinking?
Let me remind you, "It's a fucking movie.". Suspension of disbelief. I think Fight Club's story is WAAAAAAY more far fetched than Old Boy's, but you've got your blinders on, so whatever.
Go troll somewhere else, kid. You're not getting anywhere with it here.
"On the Korean Special Edition DVD of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, there is the fade to black and white version of the film. The film starts off in full colour, but throughout the film the colour fades until it is totally black and white at the end of the film.".
