When I was playing through it on a high-end system it would throw fits if I alt-tabbed. Are you sure it's actually crashing and not just hanging up for a few seconds?

I think Lord Yod has it correct, I've run into quite a few games that take their sweet, sweet time getting back to running when alt tabbed out. ME isn't one I've tried it on but I know my rig has to play some serious catch-up when I do it on HL2 and I'm running a core 2 duo 3.16GHZ with a GTX 260 and 4 gigs of ram all on vista 64.
well it was a couple minutes but it always went non responsive and i had to con-alt-del it maybe i was just impatient but i wanted to kill some heretical biotics
ME responded poorly to alt-tabbing for me, too. I'd be able to do it once or twice, but eventually the window just wouldn't restore. I ended up changing it to windowed mode if there was a time when I knew I'd be alt-tabbing a lot. I don't think it ever crashed then.
It acted similarly for me. I don't think it's a UE3 thing, I've been able to alt+tab out of other UE3 games without crashes, but never had success with Mass Effect even once.
