strategy games

I'm looking for a good real time strategy game. I loved the Age of Empires series. I don't like turn based games, nor did I like games like Civ and recently got Total War: Medieval and really don't like that series either.

AOE, Star craft and the Warcraft games were fun.

Any more modern games that come close to those?

    Company of Heroes
    Dawn of War 1/2
    Homeworld 1 + 2/Cataclysm
    Ground Control 1+2
    World in Conflict
    Empire Earth
    Rise of Nations

Any of those might fit the bill. I highly recommend the first 3(Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Homeworld). IMHO Relic is the best RTS maker out there right now, and those are their 3 games. They're all damn fantastic. Especially Company of Heroes.

The singleplayer campaign of Dawn of War II is pretty awesome. No base building, you select which squads go, equip them, kill stuff, loot stuff, level up your dudes, next mission. It's also pretty challenging and lengthy, and you can coop the campaign. (Downside: limited amount of campaign maps, about 10 of them, which get rotated / filled with different enemies).

The multiplayer game is almost completely different, and they added a survival mode as well. (That plays very different yet again). So you get 3 games for the price of one. It's on sale on Steam right now (€20,- for me, don't know the $ price).

CoH is only $5, can't beat that for that price. (+ $7,50 for the expac)

The latest Red Alert is basicly as camp as possible. If you love the bad FMV's the crazy units and the over the top soundtracks of the 90's, this is for you.

Single player or multiplayer? If you want single player, Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, and Red Alert are good choices. If you want multiplayer, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War II, and maybe World in Conflict (I don't play it) are good choices. Another thing to look into is Supreme Commander.

empire earth 2 is bitching if you liked the age of empires series, don't get 3 though, i don't know what their angle was on 3.

I didn't care much for Total War: Medieval either but i got Total War: Empire anyway because of it's great reviews and loved it. It even conquered my WoW addiction D:

Throw on Age of Mythology on the list so far.

Also Steam is having a big sale right now. Check it out. I'm about to buy Port Royale 2 for $2.49. Suppose to be a good game. At $2.49 you can't really argue.

    Sins of a Solar Empire.

I've played games of it with friends that last anywhere from a couple hours to a few days.
It can be kind of slow, but it's fun, especially with the expansion, which adds Starbases and rebalances the tech trees a little.

Seconded. Certainly not a game for everyone, but if this is your brand of Strategy (Real Time, Explore, Exploit, Attack and Defend, Research, Diplomacy), this one truly is at the top of its class. Runs great on lower-end systems, too.

Or, you know, if he wants more modern games like he said, Supreme Commander (although TA is still awesome).

And judging by the games he likes/dislikes, I don't think Sins of a Solar Empire is going to be for him at all.

Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth 2 is a solid and very very fun real time strategy game.

Also, Dawn of Discovery. I can't emphasize how awesome this damn game is. It leans toward economics more than warfare, but both are equally important, especially after a few hours of setting things up.

Download the demo for Dawn of Discovery as soon as possible! So incredibly addicting, amazing depth, and great graphics, which really adds to the immersion.

Very yes. Any of these would make you happy. If turn based is your thing have you tried galactic civilisation 1 and 2?

    OP:

I loved those games as well, especially Age of Empires. They really don't make games like Age of Empires anymore, which makes me very sad. That being said, a couple weeks ago I bought Company of Heroes and it has been fantastic. I've played ~30 something games in multiplayer so far, and they definitely have an Age of Empires feel to them, believe it or not.

Plus, it's the best overall reviewed strategy game of all time, according to gamerankings.com. I highly recommend buying it now, while its on sale.

If you are an Age of Empires fan - I think Rise Of Nations is the zenith of that genre - RTSs break down into a lot of sub-categories but I think RoN is the best of the Age-a-likes.

Comments on a few of the other suggested games:

Dawn of War II: Great squad RTS, but keep in mind it's mostly straight up combat - not much research or economy to manage.

Sins/SupCom: Holy cow these are great games. Long though - much longer than your typical Age game

Dawn of Discovery: I like this game, but to me it's a city-builder, not an RTS

I've always considered Rise of Nations to be the true "Age of Empires 3". It just happens to run the gamut from the genesis of civilization to modern tanks and mechanized infantry. In a way, it's like Civilization and Age of Empires combined (there are wonders, each civilization has select unique units available in certain ages, there's a psuedo technology tree), but the citybuilding, resource gathering, combat and such all runs in real-time. It also has a strategic map for a grand campaign that makes it somewhat Risk-esque (if you played Risk with games of AoE2 instead of rolling dice), but since you don't like turn-based strategy that particular point might not be so appealing.
