Non-descript titles for the win!
Anyways, off and on for a while, I've been toying with the idea of doing something that everyone I know has wanted to see done. A real pokemon game in 3d. I've started work on it a couple times, but like most things I start that would take a long time to do, I get distracted and put it away.
Well, I'm thinking about starting again. I'm not trying to make money, or get fame over it, but its something that would give me some creativity in creation, improve my skills in game creation(I do the 3d stuff, but can learn some rudimentary coding, etc), etc.
Here's a screenshot of what I got done in my last attempt:
Its just a simple, low poly model of the main characters house in the original, kanto game. But it didn't exactly take long to make, and I havn't done much architecture. I figure it would get easier as time went on.
I dunno, anyone have comments? Interested in such a thing? Suggestions as to what such a game should include, etc? My plan right now is to make Kanto in its entirety, and the original 151 pokemon(or most of them, anyways).
I cant url good so add me on steam anyways

That said, that house looks cool, and It would be rad to have a classic Poke'Mon game in 3D.

Ehh. It would be a not for profit thing. Some companies are pretty lax on that sort of thing, as long as its a fan creation that's not for profit.
I'm optimistic. Even if they said to shut it down, I'd probably just make it for personal fun.

Stop talking about it on the internet.
Recruit people you can trust to help you develop it, and never once show a screen shot or play a movie for someone outside the project.
Once its finished, put it on a torrent, and post the final info on as many gaming forums as you can.
Once the cat is out of the bag, you have won.
Doing it like this is bound to have papers served forcing you to stop development.
Let's play Mario Kart or something...
Include the source so fans can produce bug fixes.
It's not really about that. Companies need to protect their property regardless of what it's being used for, otherwise they won't have much of a case when somebody else does decide to use it in a way that they don't like. Also, there's really no question that Nintendo will develop a 3D Pokemon at some point. That game would absolutely print money. For that reason alone, they'd shut you down.
Well, I still don't know nintendo's policy. There are games like Pokemon Twilight, fan made games with different pokemon, that havn't been shut down. If they get mad at me for using official pokemon, I could always switch to different pokemon.

Very partially.

No one will ever know.
But seriously, if you were to develop a game with a similar premise (venture forth and capture creatures, train them, and then challenge other people in the world with them) using your own ideas and settings, I think it would still be fun. I think that the appeal of Poke'Mon was always more the ridiculous amount of monsters and the collection aspect much moreso than any of the actual characters.
Plus, it would give you complete creative freedom in terms of what kind of environments, towns, characters, monsters, storylines, and anything else in the game since they would all be created by you.
Also, Nintendo wouldn't be able to sue you, and that would also be pretty good.

So... Anyone have idea's for pokemon? My imagination is pretty crappy :P

Awesome. I serve a C&D against Mike Judge for his "Idiocracy" movie. He's clearly ripping off C.M. Kornbluth's "The Marching Morons".
...annnnnyway. My point of view is this: If you have a talent for something -- whether it's writing or art or programming or whathaveyou -- you should make your own stuff instead of fan-stuff.
If you don't have the talent, you probably shouldn't bother at all.
I keep seeing other fan made games doing what I am, just in 2d. If anything, my project is further away than those.
Jeez, you guys are such negative nancy's.
...
I will go hang myself for using that term.

That's why people are being negative. We all remember how that ended.
And there are other examples of games that weren't shut down. From what I can tell, nintendo/gamefreak either doesn't care enough to shut down these fan games, or its too hard for them to actively go after them. Either way, I keep seeing more and more fan games out there, not shut down.
If they do give me a C&D, big deal. I won't release it.
To the post below the quoted one, I don't have a great imagination, and being able to work on something that I can base off something else is what I need. Its direction. I need to work on my modeling skills, which is what this was initially intended to do.

Hey, it worked for Digimon.
Wild Grizzly Bear appears
Grizzly Bear uses Swipe
Player takes 20000000 damage
its super effective
player DIES.
=.=
I've always wanted to work on some games, never had the chance though. I'm shit at computers, but I'm pretty creative.
If you make a new Pokemon game, don't make it like the gameboy games. They're to repetitive. They need to add some new elements to the game, seriously.
a. avoiding the wrath of Nintendo (the better it gets and more successful you are with your current plan, the more likely they are to come knocking)
b. if you make significant progress, you have something you could actually turn commercial (this may not be the aim but it might be nice to have the option at least)
c. if you don't have a good imagination, its a good opportunity to develop those skills or learn to partner with someone that has those skills.
Whatever you decide, good luck
Do it before I do!
Call them Pokey-Mans.
THIS COULD BE THE GREATEST THING EVER.
...and the DAH HAW HAW HAW HAW!!
Edit: oh, and if you do actually make a game where you can capture humans like pokemon, and you need any story/writing help, you know where to look.

...HEH HEH HEH!
Oh man I want that game. "Oh no, our town's favorite restaurant is going to fail its health inspection and get shut down!" "It's ok, I caught a level 20 Health Inspector with Take Bribe in the next town over!"
Crippled Physicist Poke-man! Insane ship captain with-a-grudge-against-a-whale Poke-man! Stock Broker Pokey-Man with insider trading attacks!
Though, if you wanted something a little more PC I suppose you could call them all 'Spirits', and come up with some other aspect aligned creatures.
yea, if you decide this I'll totally help in the art department

That is really creepy.
A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon this while browsing around the internet:
http://pokemondoa.mmogamez.com/
Not only is this a Pokemon MMO with the licensed monsters, it also pretty much uses the engine from the early Pokemon games, modified to run on PC as an MMO. If Nintendo/GF hasn't nailed this yet, I imagine they just don't care.

Uh, Digimon was a virtual pet before Pokemon was a video game...
