Curt Schilling started a video game company

As you may or may not know, Schilling helped the Red Sox win the world series a couple years back.

He is also an avid Everquest player.

He has decided that he'll use his hard earned Baseball money to start a video game company and produce his own MMORPG. Because, well, he can.

So far he has hired Todd McFarlane to be the art director, and R.A. Salvatore to do the story.

We had a thread about this way back when they announced this.

Personally, I have high hopes for them. I played the original EQ with him when he was on the Rathe server. I like McFarlane's art, and Salvatore's story, but I don't really expect much from them. It's like when you get the best musicians together to make an ultimate band, but they end up sucking more then any of them could do separately.

I, uh, I don't think -SPI- was insulting Todd's artwork so much as lauding his creativity. I may be wrong though.

And c'mon, he could do worse for the art side of things. It's not like he got Liefeld to do the art.

I dislike McFarlane's art but he's not the worst out there. It's the style and the hilariously stupid designs that get me. He seems to be really good at creating things that seem really cool when you're 13.

Also, he just finished up his Dungeon Seige movie! With future prospects such as Bloodrayne 3. (He wants to make another if he makes back the $8 mill. budget on #2)

Mr. Boll will be busy for a while, so unfortunately he will not thrust himself into the actual gaming industry. Too bad.

Sounds to me like they're trying to entice people's interest in the game with big names like movies who use producers as enticement.

I don't give a fuck about producers, and I couldn't give two shits about R.A Salvatore writing an MMO. You know there's gonna be a Drizzt-like character or people will be pissed. Not me of course, but you know the types. They'll expect it, and he knows they'll expect it, and he'll either let them down and it'll doom the game, or he'll give in, and people will feel cheap and it will doom the game.

He's not the be all end all of writing in general, but I don't think it's fair to discredit his sci-fi and fantasy writing.

I'd be shocked and appalled if a drizzt character was in the game.

not that noble individuals spawned from evil races is that rare of a concept anyway.

Salvatore is very overrated, but he's good at creating worlds and characters. Just not always so amazing at executing those worlds and characters. Everything else is meh, but at least this shows he's willing to put for the big bucks to make his game. If he choses a good designer for the gameplay, we might actually see a good game come out of this. But we also might not, as there are quite a few bad designers out there who've got a name for themselves and would cost a lot.

Still, I'm leaning toward pessimism on this rather than optimism. It will probably turn out completely awful at the worst and mediocre at the best.

Considering this is an MMO we're talking about, that distinction is razor-thin.

His Dark Elf trilogy was excellent, the Halfling's Gem was okay too but not as good.

Anything after those six books involving Drizzt were complete shit. I would guess he kept getting pressured to write more books and was out of ideas, but the other series he wrote, don't even remember what it was called but it involved some Cleric doing a quest, was trash too.

I think he just got lucky with the dark elf trilogy.

The first 4 books in the Cleric Quintet were good, and the last one was trash. But yeah, his best was Dark Elf trilogy. Everything after had some good stuff (I love his Jarlaxle character, and Artemis Entreri is slightly interesting) but it was mostly mediocre.
