My lg dare is pretty much a brick at this point and im really in need of a new phone. I'm on a family plan with my mother and sister. My sister and i are eligible for a new phone next summer but my mother is able to get one now. Since my mother authorized verizon let me get a new phone now and her over the summer, im trying to decide if i should just pick up a droid now, or wait. I've been trying to look around online to see if they have anything new coming out between now and then but all i find are articles that are either very outdated or pure speculation. Anyone hear anything about a new droid phone coming out in the first quarter of 2010?
EDIT: Im on verizon

Google's effort to cannibalize its own licensers is on its way. I expect it'll be pretty nice.
I'm in the same shoes as you looking at you, i was under the impression from reading articles that the rumored google phone (Nexus) was coming out for T-mobile, of course that is also speculation. Also the Eris I believe will recieve the android 2.0 update somewhere around late January I believe.
It might be worth factoring in that the Droid platform is going through a little bit of device angst with regard to inconsistent capabilities and screen sizes.
If there are certain apps you are interested in, it's going to be a reality in the future that you'll need the right phone. There are article popping up about Droid developers abandoning the platform out of frustration.
Just an FYI. Research your device carefully before buying.
All my mates despise their Droid's battery life. Other than that I'm told its lovely.
If you take full advantage of the things that make it worth its price (GPS and texting and IMing and surfing the net and using some of the apps (<3 the NY subway/bus schedule and places directory)) then the battery life is horrid. Most of the time when I use it purely as a phone it's pretty OK though.
The Droid has great battery life unless you're using the crap out of it. I can go 2 days of normal use.
If you're using the crap out of it, its becuase it's freaking awesome.
I'd say get it now, and I'm the guy that had a Moto Razr v3m for 3+ years before upgrading. There's always something better coming, but the Droid is one hell of a phone.

Can't help you about networks but there's a very strong rumour that the HTC Passion/Bravo is going to be released during the first quarter. Probably worth waiting for if you don't want a physical keyboard. OLED screen, 720p video, Snapdragon processor. http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/08/htc-bravo-pictured-more-lucidly/
Their is always going to be another latest and greatest phone coming out every 6 months. It like any computer you buy/build it is old hat in a year. I with Verizon and I want a Droid but I bought a extended battery for my MQ9m. My Q does everything I need if abit slow at doing it. That and it is a tough little phone. I been two motorcycle accidents with it and the only thing that happen to it is the battery door pops off.

I would say that's probably par for most current gen smart phones. Certainly with the iPhone, with heavy use of comms and apps I'll be lucky to scrape through a day before it's crying for it's dock. But if I just used it as a phone...probably last three or four days at least. Maybe more, considering I rarely ever actually use the phone.

I'm generally getting a full day's use, with moderate app use, from my Motorola Droid. It could be better, but it isn't causing any issues. I get home from work and plug it in for a bit and I have no worries.
I'm just happy about the whole "plugs into USB" thing, which means I'm just going to end up with a charger for work and one for home.
If you're going to use the Nav GPS function a lot, a car charger is probably necessary.
