So I want a DSi...

But I don't know what games to get for it. Anyone have any good ideas? I like RPGs but generally don't mesh well with Japanese "themes". Not the turn based part, but the crazy hair, androgynous characters, you know that part.

Some of the first party stuff is a no brainer. Mario kart and both zeldas to start.

Anyway, hit me with your favorites.

Someone light the Slash signal etc.

    http://slashsignal.wikispaces.com/Nintendo+DS

That's a good list of top quality DS titles.
*but it's by no means comprehensive, nor does it account for individual tastes, obviously.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney - point and click adventure with awesome lawyers. It's not as weeaboo as the crazy hair would have you believe.

The World Ends With You - one the best games for the DS. It definitely has Japanese "themes" but it's an excellent RPG.

Rune Factory 1 and/or 2 are Harvest Moon RPGs. If you like Harvest Moon you should consider it.

Ported or remade RPGs include Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III and IV, Dragon Quest IV and V. Also the sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is really good. Better than the GBA one.

Also Hotel Dusk, Retro Game Challenge, Professor Layton, Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime, and Elite Beat Agents.

Is the bigger screen with wider viewing angle the only difference between the two?

Chrono Trigger is real good. Cool battle system, fun experience, great music. You've probably already played it but, it should be really high on your list if you haven't.

I think Kirby Canvas Curse is fantastic, and it's one of the only games I like that uses the touch screen in novel ways. I haven't seen the ideas in KCC revisited in any other games, unfortunately, but it's still a great experience and probably the best time I've had with my DS. It's accessible, light, colourful, and fun. Very portable. My sister really liked it, too. Show your wife, maybe?

Well the unit itself is larger over all, but yes, the size of the screen/viewing angle is the only difference.

I'm not sure if I should get a DSi now or wait for the XL.

It's pretty substantially larger. Not sure if I want to take a hit on portability like that, or if I really want to the bigger screens.

Flipnote Studio is awesome and also free. Art Academy Semester 1 is great if you are into drawing and painting. Semester 2 is also good but costs the same as Semester 1.

The Art Style games are all worth looking into. I have Pictobits and it's good although I suck at it.

Mighty Flip Champs is good and pretty unique.

I also own Dr.Mario, Bomberman Blitz, and one of the many Sudoku games for killing time on the subway.

Apparently the DSI sounds better, so when 4 Warriors of Light comes out, it might be tempting.

But that extra large one might be really near by that point.

A Japanese DSi won't be able to connect to the American DSi Shop, if that's what they mean. Imports work just fine.

If you have a DS Lite I wouldn't recommend buying a DSi. The extra features are neat but not worth buying a whole new system for.

If you don't have a DS, then definitely go straight to the DSi. If you want to play GBA games so badly then get a GBASP (then you can play older GB games too). Lack of GBA support is the only downside to the DSi.

The only reason you should consider the Lite is if you want to play GBA games sometime in the future.

Can't believe I'm the first to recommend Advance Wars: Dual Strike again. Such a marvel of a game.

The battery life of my DS Lite is, like, 6-8 hours now on the second brightest setting, compared to 10-14 hours brand new. So it doesn't really make a huge difference in the long run.

But really, that's like exactly the wrong game to suggest when he specified RPGs that aren't too crazy japanese quirky. Because that's like, what it is.

    How about the mario RPGs?
