First time to NYC, short trip. What to see/do/eat?

So the BF and I are going to NYC for our first time together. Neither of us have been before. I've looked at all the other NYC threads, but wanted to make a new one because we've got a few caveats, so suggestions would be very helpful/welcome

We'll be flying into JFK arriving about 7:30pm or so on Jan. 8 (Friday) barring snow or weather delays. We'll be leaving that Sunday night, so we have about 2 days to do fun things. I've traveled extensively throughout Europe so I feel comfortable with big cities, I think we're fine in that respect.

Fun facts about us to make this easier!
--We have about 50$ per day for food for each of us, whatever doesn't get used for food can be used for other fun stuff. So we'll have between 200-300$ total to spend, plus $250 on reserve that we can use if we need to but prefer not too (ie we're cheap eaters)
--Plan right now is that our early Saturday afternoon will be taken up by scheduled stuff we're going there for, otherwise we're free
--We don't drink/smoke, so breweries/bars aren't really of interest.
--BF loves comics and video games, so it'd be fun to hit up an awesome comic store somewhere.
--I love museums/books/architecture and I'd like to see a play if we can do so on the cheap.
--Tell us where the best bagels/pizza are to be found! We love both.

So far I've gleaned the following from thee vast knowledge of PA:
Want to visit:
-Strand bookstore
-Forbidden Planet
-FAO Schwarz
-Either Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center for the view.
-American Museum of Natural History

Any further recommendations/suggestions as to stuff to see/not see in January? Anything we need to know about NYC especially? Anyone want to grab a bite with us? We'd love to meet fellow PA'ers.

Is the UN building of any interest to you? It was a priority for me when I went, and I should have done a better job timing my visit to actually seeing something going on.

Ah, yes! I didn't think of that one. Thanks!

I also want to add, if there are any concerts going on, we are also big music lovers. Please suggest away in that regard.

The second you touch down look for a copy of 'The Onion'. They have a weekly calendar of cool/cheap stuff to do.

If you're both students, I think a lot of museums are free. Scratch Natural History off the list, that's just dioramas and bullshit. Go to the Metropolitan. A few reasons why:

    1. It's on the cool side of the park. UES RULEZ!
    2. The permanent Egyptian Art Exhibit will make you crap yourself its so awesome. They have a room with a massive window and a pool of sorts
    3. The Roman art exhibit is the tits
    4. The medevil knights armor and weapons exhibit is right next to the samurai armor and weapons exhibit.
    5. All of these things are real and much cooler than a museum featuring 99% rocks and paper maché.

If you want to catch a broadway show 'on the cheap', it's still going to be about $50-80 a ticket. Best bet is the TKTS booths. There's one in Time Square, one at South Street seaport, and a few others Ive never seen. Queue up early. The lines are a bitch. http://www.tdf.org/

Send the daily show / colbert report an email. Their tickets are free. Last time I saw the daily show I saw a couple from UK pop in line early and people had extra free tickets. It might be worth a shot, and if not the studio itself gives you directions to alternate plans:

Oh and the Tim Burton exhibit at the moma was pretty bad ass, I wouldnt wait on the line though. It may calm down by January if it's still open.

Daily Show doesn't tape on the weekends, so that would be out.

OP, Forbidden Planet is the best comic shop I ever found in the city, so you're already set there. There was a great pizza place a few blocks from there, but they changed ownership and now they suck :(. For cheap theater tickets, some (many?) shows do rush tickets - show up earlier in the day and get in line or they do a lottery thing. They're usually like $20, and obstructed view seats - which often means front row. I saw Rent, The Wedding Singer, and Avenue Q this way, though at least the first two of those have closed since. Check the website of whatever shows you're interested in, the info will be there.

If you do the ESB go late at night - the tourist crowds are gone by then and I personally think the city looks better lit up. I think they used to be open til 11, but it's been almost 10 years since I've been.

Neither of us are students, but we both still have our college IDs. Worth a try?

Are the Met and the AMNH both donation based entrance?

Also: ESB or Rockefeller for the views? Both are pricey...which affords a better look at the city?

Man Deebaser, the Museum of Natural History is fantastic and a whole lot more than just "dioramas and bullshit". It does have a ton of paleontology and other traditional history stuff, but there's the Rose Center for Earth and Space including the Hayden Planetarium (home to world renowned physicist Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson), the butterfly conservatory, and a bunch of nifty animal exhibits, etc.

It's well worth your time Dulcius, though the Met and MoMA are also great, but you could easily spend a day plus at each one and still have things leftover to see.

Yes. I had a teacher on a field trip pay for 30 admissions with a dollar once. He said any time he went by himself he'd only pay a nickel.

EDIT: While I don't hate on the nat. history, the Met is far superior.

    Touché. L2Read, Dee, L2Read.

Also, about a block away from Forbidden Planet, there's Halloween Adventure. It's a pretty badass costume shop that's worth a look. They have a scale Han Solo in Carbonite prop and other random stuff like that.

If you like comedy Upright Citizen's Brigade does nightly shows that are hit or miss, but only $5-$10.

On museums and donations: Met, Natural History, and I think the Guggenheim have "suggested donations" with reduced "suggested donations" for students. The clerks will let you in for a less than suggested donation, but they peer into your soul and make you feel like a douche. I've seen it. :) (Full disclosure, Im a corporate member, so my friends and I dont pay dick or wait in line. As always YMMV)

Im pretty sure Moma has an actual honest to God ticket price, but I could be wrong.

Sorry if I caused offense to the Natural History Museum. The met is just 10000x better and I find natural history very boring and hate the upper west side. Also, I am jealous that they have a Shake Shack by the museum now.

I recommend the Guggenheim. Both the Guggenheim and Moma do have actual ticket prices, but on Saturday from 5:45 - 7:45 the Guggenheim does pay what you wish.

Also, I concur with Deebaser that your time will be better spent at the Met than the Natural History Museum.

You can also definitely afford to skip Alex Grey's Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.
Edit: Actually, the NYC location is closed.

The Met is doing a pretty cool special event. For the next few months, they'll be showing their entire Japanese collection, including stuff that's been in storage since acquired.

You may not be religious - but St. Patricks Cathedral was a pretty cool visit. Go see a broadway show or two. You can usually get much cheaper tickets at one of the booths..I forget what they are called now. They often sell the tickets cheaper for shows that aren't selling out. Avenue Q is my recommendation. I second the top of the Empire State building. It was an awesome view at night.

When I went to New York I ate many a meal at Famous Original Ray's Pizza on 7th Ave between 53rd and 54th street. It may be touristy, but it was totally awesome- the giant globs of spinach on the veggie pizza were delicious and I saw a guy get into a shouting match with one of the cooks because they didn't have cheese pizza. Also, don't be afraid to try out the small diners- the food was good and not very expensive.

I would second the MoMA. I seem to recall that we went at a special time and got in for free, but I don't remember the particulars. They had this cool exhibit on magic lanterns at the time. Of course, it was also really crowded.

If you are going to the Empire State Building you will be very close to Koreatown. If that sounds tasty go to Woorijip for delicious premade/buffet food that's under $9/person (don't go to the noodle bar though) or any number of other places (Woo Chon, Gahm Mi Oak, Kun Jip, Mad for Chicken) if you don't mind spending a little more.

Oh yes, definitely check out St. Patrick's Cathedral. It's by Rockefeller Center and is quite a sight.
