wellbutrin and alcohol

wellbutrin is a great smoking cessation aid. it makes me not enjoy cigarettes without actually making them disgusting.

you're not supposed to mix with alcohol, but some say you can drink in moderation.

what isn't addressed is whether they're talking in general or when you've actually taken the medication.

i.e if I plan on drinking and decide not to take it on that day, does the interaction warning still apply?

    yes

Wellbutrin can take weeks to completely eliminate from your body, so skipping one dose doesn't make you medication-free

I'm no doctor, but from what I recall, most anti-depressants as such function by gradually building up in your system. It's not like a pain killer that hits and exists in a 24 hour period. You have a sustained amount building up, and it generally takes 2-4 weeks to get it up to where it needs to be in order to work.

So, the answer I'd give is "no", you can't just skip a day like nothing has happened.

A lot of people have very different experiences. If you're worried, call your doctor. Either that or have a shot some evening with a careful person around to ensure no totally adverse reaction and see how you feel. For many people, it amplifies the effects of the intoxicant. I've had many friends drink while on meds, and generally they turn into a pretty cheap date.

either try some other way to stop smoking or volunteer to be sober driver for a few months?

you can still go out with friends even if you can't get drunk.

The problem with wellbutrin is that it has the potential to lower your seizure threshold. If taken as prescribed the chance of having a seizure is quite low, but the combination of alcohol and bupropion in your bloodstream will increase your risk. That being said, I was on wellbutrin for a while and still drank in moderation and never experienced any adverse health affects. Just keep your drinking to a minimum (2-3 drinks tops) and Im sure you'll be fine.

Also if you have to worry about what your friends will think of you if you can't get wasted because of health reasons, you may need new friends.

edit: I'm on it and can still drink, it just lowers my tolerance a ton. So I guess you can still get drunk.. just be very careful when doing so. It won't take much, and there can be other complications that vary by person.

I had zero change in my tolerance while on wellbutrin, so that also varies by person.

I still drank socially when the occasion "required" it while on wellbutrin, and it really wasn't any different from drinking while on no medications for me. Actually, the only effect wellbutrin ever had on me was a noticeable tremor in my fingers once I had been on 450mg a day for a while.

the main problem with drinking on an anti-depressant is that alcohol is a depressant so it will make your meds not work. If you're going to drink frequently it pretty much defeats the purpose of taking meds at all.

I know that when I wake up the next day after a night of heavy drinking(which I've been doing less and less often)I feel really depressed and agitated.

however it sounds like you're taking it primarily as a smoking cessation aid? I can't really say how alcohol will change the efficacy of wellbutrin in that capacity.

I was on Wellbutrin once. I could drink in moderation without any problems, but DO NOT DRINK HEAVILY WHILE ON WELLBUTRIN! I did that once and had a horribly embarrassing incident in which I blacked out completely, punched a friend, and had to be dragged home. I am a really happy, fun drink, so when I heard about some of the terrible shit I did, I was shocked and horrified.
